Title: Why are they called Giants?

1
Why are they called Giants?
2
Are We Significant?
3
Is the Sun Significant?
4
The Sun Disappears!
5
The Outer Planets Gas Giants
  • The four planets farthest away from the Sun are
    called the outer planets.
  • These planets are
  • Jupiter Saturn Uranus Neptune

6
Why Gas Giants
  • These Planets do not have a hard rocky surface
    like Earth does.
  • They all are much bigger than Earth.

7
Why are they so big?
  • They are made of mostly Hydrogen and
helium(balloon) gases, and a few other gases.
  • They are so far from the Sun that the gases are
    very cold and liquid.
  • They are not heavy and solid like rocks.

8
Jupiter
  • It is our biggest planet, over 1000 times bigger
    than Earth.
  • It is 400 times farther from the Sun than earth
and so cold that its hydrogen and helium gases
    turn to liquid.
  • Jupiters moon Europa is covered with ice and
    maybe life forms.

9
Saturn
  • It is the second largest planet and has the
    largest and most visable rings.
  • Like Jupiter,it is made up of liquid hydrogen and
    helium liquid gases.
  • Its rings are made from ice and rock from an
    exploding Moon.

10
Uranus
  • It is twice as far from the Sun as Saturn and
only 4 times bigger than earth.
  • It spins on its side because its axis is
    horizontal.
  • Its blue-green color comes from the frozen
methane gases trapped in the helium/hydrogen
    gases.

11
Neptune
  • The smallest and farthest gas planet from the
    sun.
  • It also appears blue because of the frozen liquid
    methane gas on its surface.

12
Pluto
  • Has a solid surface and is much smaller and
denser than the other outer planets
  • Has at least one moon Charon which is large and
    considered a double planet

13
Is Pluto A Planet?
  • It is very small
  • There are other things in space that are larger
    than Pluto.
  • It is highly published as a planet
  • At one time was removed from the text as a planet
  • It is a body worthy of study (video)
