Title: Pinching is one of
1Pinch Pots
Pinching is one of the most basic forms of
working with clay. In this lesson, you will be
Using pinching to create a Series of pinch pots
that Show texture on the surface.
2The Pinch Pot that You create does not Have to
be perfectly Even. There can be Differences in
the Sides, and the top. This gives your
vessel A look like it is Natural (or organic)
3Every Vessel that You create should have 3
basic parts. The lip (the top opening of The
vessel) The Body (The main/middle Part of the
vessel) The Foot (Where the vessel Rests on the
bottom)
4You can create areas of your vessel that are
raised up from the body. This will help to create
patterns and interest along the surface of your
Work.
5When we glaze your pinch pot, we Will be
conducting a rub where the Textures will be
colored black, and The outer surface of the
vessel Will remain white. IMPORTANT! Make sure
you Press your textures in deep enough That the
glaze will stick!
6Hopi Burnished Pinch Pots
7In this lesson, you will Be using a process call
Burnishing to create a Smooth texture on your
Pinch pot. Burnishing is the process Of
smoothing out the Surface of your clay before
It has been bisque fired by Rubbing a smooth
object Over the surface multiple Times.
8Burnishing is a process That the Hopi Indian
Tribe has used for Hundreds of years to
create A shiny smooth surface Without the use of
glazes.
9The other element that The Hopis use in their
Ceramics work is the use Form. Hopi Ceramics
is traditionally As perfect in shape as
possible. The vessel will be perfectly
balanced All the way around (including the Lip,
body and foot of the vessel).
