The word below is set with mathematically even
spacing, the extreme right of each letter is
equal distance from the left edge of the next.
The result is a poorly spaced word.

3Horizontal Spacing
Proper letterspacing is achieved through the
adjustment of space between pairs of letters. The
amount of adjustment, either more or less space,
is an optical, rather than a mathematical
decision. Adjusting space between pairs of
letters is called Kerning.
4Horizontal Spacing
As a rule of thumb, pairs of letters whose edges
are defined by vertical strokes will have more
space between them relative to pairs with curved
or angled strokes.
HL
5HorizontalSpacing
Spacing between a letter whose edge is defined by
a vertical stroke and a letter whose edge is
defined by a curved stroke will be less, relative
to pairs whose edges are defined by vertical
strokes as in the previous slide.
HC
6Horizontal Spacing
Spacing between a pair of letters whose edges are
defined by curved strokes will have less space
between them relative to a pair whose edges are
defined by a vertical stroke and a curved strokes
as in the previous slide.

If one thinks of the negative space between
letters as vessels which hold water, then adjust
spacing so that each vessel holds approximately
the same amount of water. In other words, see the
area of negative space between letters, rather
than the distance between letters.
8Vertical Spacing
Leading The term used to describe vertical
spacing of type is Leading. It is the space
between lines of type and is measured in points.
A designer can adjust the amount of space between
lines of type in order to achieve a desired
design effect, to control the amount of vertical
space a block of type takes up, or to control the
tonal value of a block of type.
