• The long awaited 100th day of school finally
  arrived this week. In preparation this year we
  had the children count out one hundred of various
  materials found around the school and classroom.
  We were able to scaffold the childrens learning
  as they learned that the easy way to count to 100
  was by grouping the material into groups of 10.

Often to young children, 100 means the most. To
challenge this notion, we asked the class to
estimate which of three bags contained 100
kernels of popcorn. They were all quite surprised
to learn that the bag with the fewest number of
kernels was the correct answer.

On day 100, we filled the day with fun learning.
The children were able to stamp, fingerprint, or
sticker 100 times into a grid that had 100
squares. A 100 day crown was also a big hit.  
The children decorated their 100 day glasses,
brought as a gift from the much loved Zero the
Hero.

The children were saddened to remember that it
was Zeros last visit to our classroom. Sometimes
milestones are bittersweet. They had the
opportunity to build with 100 red Solo cups
what fun and what moans when the tall creations
crashed to the floor!

And what a snack we ate 100s! One was made
from cucumbers and carrots, another from a sliced
mini bagel and a pretzel.  They were delicious!

• For some children, the best part was getting to
  meet someone who is turning 100 both in days
  and in years. We met Shaunas new baby, Tanner,
  who is 100 days old this week. Such a cutie! Then
  we met Grandpa Leo, who will be 100 the end of
  March. He is a joyful senior here at the J, very
  happy and positive and he has that lovely South
  African accent. The children thought up a few
  questions to ask him like, what did he play with
  when he was little, where did he live, and even
  if he had lost some teeth. We were amazed to
  learn his favorite memory was being able to
  recite parts of Shakespeares Julius Caesar,
  after one child had said he thought he might not
  remember much. We plan to revisit Grandpa Leo on
  his birthday.
