NORTH. FIRST REPUBLICAN NATIONAL CONVENTION WAS
HELD IN PHILADELPHI IN 1856.

USED THE WILMOT PROVISIO THAT HAD URGED THAT
SLAVERY BE PROHIBITED FROM ANY TERRITORY ACQUIRED
AS A RESULT OF THE MEXICAN WAR. THIS WAS NEVER
PASSED INTO LAW BUT WAS THE BASIS OF THE
REPUBLICAN MOVEMENT.
