Possessives
  • Possessives are words that how ownership. You
    make a noun show possession by using an
    apostrophe () and usually the letter S. Plural
    nouns that do not show possession do not use an
    apostrophe

Rule 1 Add s to show the possessive for a
singular noun and for a plural noun that does not
end in s.
  • Singular Possessive
  • Johns sons are going fishing next weekend.
  • Jesss fishing reel is broken.
  • Plural Possessive
  • The childrens rods are in the garage.

Rule 2 Add only an apostrophe to show the
possessive for a plural noun ending in S.
  • Plural Possessive
  • Both sons fishing rods are broken.
  • The books covers are ruined.

Rule 3 Dont use an apostrophe with the
possessive pronouns his, hers, ours, its, yours,
theirs.
  • The books in the desk are theirs.
  • The committee did a good job. The credit for the

possessives that sound the same.
