The Influence of Metil Substituent in p-Toluidine
on The Percentage Yield of
N-(4-methyl-phenyl)-N'-benzoylthiourea Using
Microwave
Assisted Organic Synthesis
The aim of this research was to determine
the influence of methyl substituent in
p-toluidine on the percentage yield of
N-(4-methy. phenyl)-N- benzoylthiourea. It
has been done by comparing yields of the
N-(4-mehy 1- phenyl)-Nbenzoylthiourea and
N-phenyl-N -benzoylthiourea, that were made
by the same method and condition. A simple and
rapid method for synthesis N-(4- mehy
1-phenyl)-N'-benzoylthiourea and
N-phenyl-N'-benzoylthiourea has been done
under solvent-free and microwave
irradiation conditions. The both compound
were synthesized by two step reaction.
Substitution acyl nucleophilic was the fI1rst,
this reaction was subj ected to microwave
irradiation (110 W) for 1 minutes and followed by
nucleophilic addition, this reaction was
subjected to microwave irradiation (110 W) for 5
minutes.
The percentage yield of N-phenyl-N'-benzoylthiour
ea (52,29 4,50 ) is higher than that of
N-(4-mehy l-phenyl)-N.! benzoylthiourea (42,69
4,11 ). N- phenyl-N'-benzoylthiourea was
obtained as colorless needles (mp 150-152
C), while N-(4-methyl-phenyl)-N'-benzoylthiourea
was obtained as colorless needles (mp 156-158
C). The structure of the both synthesized
compounds were comfrrmed by UV, IR and IH-NMR
spectral data.
As conclusion, methyl substituent in p-toluidine
were not influenced yield percentage of N-(4-mehy
I-phenyl)-N'-benzoylthiourea compared with
Nphenyl- N'-benzoylthiourea because p-toluidine
was adsorb by silica gel.
