"Shelter-in-place" means to take immediate
shelter where you areat home, work, school or in
between usually for just a few hours. Local
authorities may instruct you to
"shelter-in-place" if chemical or radiological
contaminants are released into the environment.

- Specific Terrorist ThreatsBiological attack -
deliberate release of germs or other substance.
Many agents must be inhaled, enter through a cut
in the skin or eaten to make you sick. Chemical
attack - deliberate release of toxic gas, liquid
or solid to poison people and the environment.
Nuclear attack - explosion with intense light and
heat, a damaging pressure wave and widespread
radioactive material that can contaminate the
air, water and ground surfaces for miles around. - Dirty bomb - the use of common explosives to
spread radioactive materials over a targeted
area.

We cannot adequately prepare for every
contingency1. We can prepare ourselves to think
ahead without fretting and to respond without
panicking2. If ye are prepared, ye need not
fear.

for adversity in life by having a basic supply of

- Do NOT ration - find ways to get more
- Water storage - MIMIMUM one gallon per person per
day - Clean water, free of dangerous pathogens and
chemicals, is more essential than food - Storage AND filtration

- Do not store in milk bottles - they will
disentegrate in about six months - Store bleach - shelf life of about one year,
rotate - Filtration - professional, coffee filters
- Boiling - will need heating options
- Purification tablets

- In most circumstances - YES if you safely can
- Exception - Avian Influenza - two to seven days
incubation period until noticeable symptoms but
the person may be contagious - You may be sharing death

- First aid kit and manual
- Sufficient warm clothes and bedding in the event
there is no heat - mummy bags, wool blankets,
down comforters, wool socks, hats,
mittens/gloves, Thinsulate items - Heavy guage plastic and duct tape

- N-95 face masks - recommended for Avian Influenza
outbreak, other uses - Multiple N95 options available

- Develop a communication plan - establish an

a removable toilet seat can serve as a temporary
toilet - Garbage cans should have tightly fitting lids
- Store extra garbage bags of several sizes for
trash and human waste disposal

- Store contractor-size heavy duty garbage bags in
the event of a death when no emergency assistance
is available - Store duct tape for securing bags and other

the building - Avoid overloading of electrical circuits
