DEFINITION

• Korean Augmentation to the United States Army

HISTORY

• Initiated in July 1950, just after the outbreak
  of the Korean War
• At its peak, KATUSA strength reached 27,000
• Assigned to all EUSA organization, reducing U.S.
  troop requirements

REGULATION

• EUSA Reg. 600-2
• Only one chain of command, U.S. chain of command
• Chain of management is up to ROKA Support Group
• Not subject to the UCMJ

TRAINING

• Mandatory ROK-directed morale training on every
  Tuesday
• Only can be replaced by another training, like
  FTX, but not duty
• English training
• MOS training

• The Commander of ROKA Support Group
• The Regional Senior ROKA Officers
• ROKA Staff Officers
• ROKA CSM

SELECTION OF KATUSA

• Half of them selected by the TOEIC scores
• Direct Selection at the 2nd ROK Training Center
• As of 1999, KATUSA soldiers will be selected by a
  lottery, in which candidates with scores of 600
  or higher on the TOEIC

BASIC TRAINING

• 6 weeks of basic training at the 2nd ROKA
  Training Center in Nonsan
• 3 weeks of training at the KATUSA Training
  Academy--Cp Jackson

LEAVE

• Controlled by the Unit ROKA Staff Officers
• A total of 35 days of ordinary leave that is
  given at three-time interval during 26 months
  service
• The pass privilege is a function of U.S. Command

HOLIDAYS

• Entitled to observe all ROK national and special
  holidays as well as U.S. holiday
