  • There are 8 traits geographers look at to study a
    culture
  • Language, Religion, Social groups, Government,
    Economy, History, Daily life, and the Arts

Language
  • Through language, people communicate information
    and experiences and pass on cultural values and
    traditions.
  • Dialects also unify groups within the larger
    culture. They use the same words but with
    different pronunciations.

Religion
  • Religions help people answer basic questions
    about lifes meanings.
  • People who share religious beliefs feel a strong
    connection to each other.
  • Sometimes religious belief can divide people.

Social Groups
  • Develop to help the members of a culture work
    together to meet basic needs.
  • There are many different types of groups in a
    society. Family is usually the most important,
    but class can also play a big role.
  • Geographers look at how they are alike and how
    they are different.
  • Ethnic Groups are cultures within other cultures.

Government
  • Governments maintain order within the country,
    provides protection from outside dangers, and
    supplies other services to its people.
  • Different types of government reflect cultures.
    Governments are based on shared values.
  • How they are organized and who holds power is
    reflective of cultural values.

Economy
  • Economy is based on how a culture utilizes its
    natural resources to meet human needs. Also, how
    people produce, obtain, use, and sell goods and
    services
  • Traditional-based on beliefs and customs
  • Market-based on freedom, personal choice
  • Command-based on government control
