Alcohol and drugs can lower your inhibitions
(your self-consciousness or will-power)
11Consequences of STDs
- Some are asymptomatic (w/o symptoms) causing
permanent damage before you know - Some are incurable pathogens cannot be
eliminated from body (genital herpes, AIDS) - Some cause cancer and cannot be cured (Hepatitis
B, HPV) - Some cause sterility damage to the reproductive
organs - Some cause birth defects in baby and can be
passed to baby before, during, or after birth
12The only sure way to prevent a STD is ...
Abstinence
There is NO other 100 method!
13Types of Sexually Transmitted Diseases
Chlä-mid-e-ä
Discharge, burning, abdominal pain
- Chlamydia most common cause of sterility
because of no symptoms until its too late
(pelvic pain after it is too late) - Genital herpes incurable, painful blisters and
ulcers caused by the herpes simplex 2 virus
(45,000,000 people and 1,000,000 more each year)
Untreated causes PID (pelvic inflammatory disease
in females sterility

15Gonorrhea bacteria affects mucous membranes and
causes_________. It can spread to the bloodstream
which damage joints and _______ an _______ baby

Human Papillomavirus (HPV)
- several strains of ______ but 30 types are
transmitted by sexual contact - causes genital ______ that are highly
contagious - no symptoms often (warts up to 3 months later)
- develops into ________ (causing almost all
cervical cancer and cancer of the penis)

18Human Papillomavirus (HPV)
Once infected, a person has the virus for life
Treatment can make warts go away but virus is
still there.
19Syphilis a sore(s) called chancre(s)
(shan-kuhr) appears on genitals at the site of
infection
Stages Primary Single or more chancre sore(s)
anywhere from 10-90 days, painless and appears
where the bacteria entered body Lasts 3-6
weeks Heals w/o treatment Infection progresses if
treatment is not received
20Secondary Skin rash and mucous membrane
lesions A rash of rough red, brownish spots on
the body, usually on soles and palms, but not an
itchy rash (more so if dark skinned) Rash
sometimes unnoticed or looks like other
rashes May have flu-like symptoms at the same
time fever, swollen lymph nodes, weight loss,
sore throat, aches, and fatigue Patchy hair
loss w/o treatment moves into next stage
21Latent Stage The hidden stage where all symptoms
disappear w/o treatment but bacteria remains in
the body Can last for years
If not treated
- destroying tissue inc muscles
- eventually causes major organ damage (heart,
liver, CNS, and kidneys - Dementia/senility
- Blindness
- paralysis

22Might heal w/o treatment but the bacteria is
still present. Must be treated medically or will
go into several stages that lead to death
Can transfer to unborn baby and is deadly
Has stages primary, secondary, and latent
stages
