Catawba- River People

• The Catawba Indians lived in the Piedmont region
  near the Catawba River.

The Catawba used the land to meet their needs by

• Fishing
• Hunting
• farming

Food

• The men would set fires in small areas to capture
  and kill animals.
• The men and women planted corn, squash, and beans.

• They also made pottery, bowls, baskets, and mats
  to trade with other tribes and settlers.

The Catawba Homes

• The Catawba built round or oval homes made of
  saplings, or young trees.
• Many family members lived in one bark house.
• The top always had a hole for smoke to escape.

Catawba Government

• The Catawba built a council house for meetings.
• Each village had a chief who led the council
• Nopkehe was the chief of the Catawba from
  1750-1763. He worked for peace with other Native
  Americans and English settlers
