Title: Classification

Classification

A farmer has to get a sack of corn, a chicken,
and a fox across a river. The farmer is only able
to bring one of the above items along with him at
a time. The only problem is if he leaves the fox
alone with the chicken, the fox will eat the
chicken, and if he leaves the chicken along
the corn sack, then the chicken will eat the
corn sack. How does the farmer get all 3 items
across safely
3
Answer The farmer brings the chicken across.
Goes back and brings the fox across, and brings
the chicken back with him to the other side of
the river and drops off the chicken, then he goes
and brings the corn sack across, and finally he
goes back for the chicken and brings it across.
4
Examine the two organisms above. On your own,
in your notebooks create a T-Chart depicting the
similarities and differences between the two
organisms
similarities
differences
5
share your observations with your table partners

  • Four limbs
  • Two eyes
  • Four toes on front foot
  • Large wide mouth
  • Compact body
  • Skin coloration
  • Eye color
  • Eye location on head
  • Toes have different shapes
  • Live in different habitats

7
How is the music grouped in this store?
What is the advantage of grouping music this way?
8
Species of Organisms
  • There are 13 billion known species of organisms
  • This is only 5 of all organisms that ever
    lived!!!!!
  • New organisms are still being found and
    identified

9
What is Classification?
  • Classification is the arrangement of organisms
into orderly groups based on their similarities
  • Classification is also known as taxonomy
  • Taxonomists are scientists that identify name
    organisms

10
Benefits of Classifying
  • Accurately uniformly names organisms
  • Prevents misnomers such as starfish jellyfish
    that aren't really fish
  • Uses same language (Latin or some Greek) for all
    names

Seahorse??

Hierarchy-Taxonomic Groups
  • Domain
  • Kingdom
  • Phylum (Division used for plants)
  • Class
  • Order
  • Family

  • Genus
  • Species

How do scientists name organisms?
16
Confusion in Using Different Languages for Names
17
Latin Names are Understood by all Taxonomists
18
Standardized Naming
  • Binomial nomenclature used
  • Genus specific epithet
  • Latin or Greek
  • Italicized in print
  • Capitalize genus, but NOT specific epithet
  • Underline when writing

Turdus migratorius
American Robin
