ABC Lesson 2
Vocabulary
Pronoun Practice - 4
Agent suffix

All signs that are MALE originate here at the
forehead. MALE, BOY, FATHER, MAN, GRANDFATHER,
UNCLE, NEPHEW, MALE COUSIN, BROTHER,
All signs that are FEMALE originate here at the
chin. FEMALE, GIRL, MOTHER, WOMAN, GRANDMOTHER,
AUNT, NIECE, FEMALE COUSIN, SISTER
3
Perhaps you are curious WHY? Sometimes knowing
the reason a sign looks the way it does, helps
you remember it. Remember when the first school
for the Deaf was established? In 1817 women
(or even girls for that matter) did not EVER go
out without wearing their BONNETS!
4
Sign for GIRL, FEMALE comes from the ribbon on
the bonnet. Dominant hand A shape-thumb draws a
ribbon down the chin.
5
At the same time In 1817 men did not go out in
publiceither without wearing their
HATS! When a man met a lady on the streetthe
polite thing to do was always
6
Tip his hat to her. So the sign for MALE is a
variation of a man tipping his hat to greet a
female in public.
7
Ladies and Gentlemen with manners. MALE POLITE
became MAN FEMALE POLITE became WOMAN
8
Lets try signing themWatch as I model the signs.
