Title: Jan Exam Practice questions

1
Jan Exam Practice questions
  • 1. List the main kingdoms of living organisms.
  • Archaebacteria Eubacteria Fungi Protista
    animal plant
  • 2. Describe and explain the particle theory.
  • As you increase energy (heat) you increase the
    speed and movement of particles.
  • There are 3 states of matter (solid, liquid, gas)
  • 3. What are acids and bases? How do you identify
    them?
  • Acids have a pH less than 7 bases have a
pH more than 7 and neutral substances have a pH
equal to 7. You can use litmus paper to identify
    acids, bases, and neutral substances.
  • Ex. If red litmus paper stays red and blue litmus
paper turns red then you have an acid.
  • 4. What is the difference between an observation
    and an inference?
  • Observation You are stating the facts (based on
one or more of your five senses)
  • Inference You are making a scientific guess
    based on your observations
  • and non characteristic properties?

2
  • 5. Name 2 physical and 2 chemical changes.
  • Physical cutting wood melting ice
  • Chemical burning wood apple rotting
  • 6. What are the different kinds of mixtures? What
is a solution? What is a pure substance?
  • Heterogeneous (see the various components of the
mixture) and homogeneous (one phase --- cant see
    the components)
  • A solution is a homogenous mixture (made up of a
    solute and solvent)
  • A pure substance cannot be separated into other
kinds of matter by any physical or chemical
    process

3
  • 7. What is a food chain? Give an example and list
the various components to said food chain.
  • The energy consumption relationship between
various organisms living in the same ecosystem.
  • Producer consumer decomposer
  • Plants (producer) grasshopper (consumer 1st)
mouse (consumer 2nd) snake (consumer 3rd) owl
    (consumer 4th) mushrooms (decomposer)
  • 8. What is the difference between characteristic
    and non-characteristic properties?
  • Characteristic Helps you identify the
    substance unique property (i.e. Density)
  • Non-characteristic Property common to many
    substances (i.e. Colour)
