E1/E2 meeting on Intrinsic impurity transport
modelling versus experiment
R. Neu E1/E2 Meeting, 7/4/11

Introduction
  • Manning
  • Intrinsic impurity transport modelling versus
    experiment
  • R. Neu
  • Introduction and plans
  • 13.30 E. Fable
  • Turbulent impurity transport in the core of
    tokamaks, physical mecha-nisms, ongoing
validation efforts, potential impact on plasma
    discharges
  • 14.05 R. Dux
  • Impurity transport in the ETB of AUG H-Mode
    discharges
  • 14.40 Coffee
  • 14.55 M. Valisa
  • Achievements and open issues in impurity profile
    control at JET
  • 15.30 C. Giroud
  • Impurity transport characterisation in JET
    operational scenarios

3
Manning Issues
  • Preliminary Results from the Manning Selection
  • good coverage (personnel, dates) of competencies
  • SC selection close to being finalised
  • Detailed analysis for identification of gaps and
    shortages ongoing
  • TSL selection had to be restricted to 12
candidates due to available number of slots (min.
    stay 60 days)
  • Next steps in the manning selection
  • TFL/(CSU) meetings on the 8th, 11th and 12th of
    April to finalise
  • Allocated time for parastic experiments in
    restart (interaction TFL/CSU/POG)

Impurity Transport
  • One of main ILW goals
  • Demonstrate/investigate feasibilty of W
divertor operation in baseline and advanced
    scenarios
  • Dedicated experiments as well as long term
    monitoring envisaged
  • Two extremes could hamper investigations
  • - strong negative impact of central W radiation
  • ? change of experiment strategy could be
    necessary
  • - no measurable influence of W
  • ? loss of interest by non experts, design of
    dedicated discharges
  • Supporting investigations on intrinsic impurities
    by injection of tracers
  • (LBO, gas puffs)

8
Dedicated sessions for impurity transport
investigations
Category 1
  • Ex-2.2.1 Determination and control of the
intrinsic impurity composition in the full W
    divertor (4 sessions)
  • Ex-2.2.2 W screening, peaking and control (5
    sessions)
  • Ex-3.2.5 Effect of SOL transport, pedestal and
    ELMs on impurity transport (C30)

Category 2
  • Ex-2.1.6 Characterisation of ICRF heating with
    the ILW
  • Ex-2.2.4 Impurity seeding in preparation for ITER
  • Ex-1.1.7 Divertor W erosion and ELM induced
    sputtering
  • Ex-1.1.8 Long term evolution of W erosion and
    migration

9
Parasitic experiments for impurity transport
investigations
Parasitic
