Fallen Angels
2
Fallen Angels by Walter Dean Meyers
  • Set in the trenches of the Vietnam War in the
late 1960s, Fallen Angels is the story of Perry.
Sent to the front lines, Perry and his platoon
come face-to-face with the Vietcong and the real
horror of warfare. But violence and death aren't
the only hardships. As Perry struggles to find
virtue in himself and his comrades, he questions
why black troops are given the most dangerous
assignments, and why the U.S. is there at all.

3
Ellen Foster

4
Ellen Foster by Kaye Gibbons
  • 'When I was little I would think of ways to kill
my daddy. I would figure out this or that way and
run it down and run it down through my head until
it got easy.' So it begins the tale of Ellen
Foster, the brave and engaging heroine of Kaye
Gibbon's novel. The story of an eleven-year-old
orphan, driven to desperation by some of the
wickedest relatives in literary history, this is
the story of her battle for survival.

5
SPEAK

6
Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson
  • When Melinda Sordino's friends discover she
called the police to quiet a party, they
ostracize her, turning her into an outcast --
even among kids she barely knows. But even worse
than the harsh conformity of high-school cliques
is a secret that you have to hide.

7
The Chocolate War

8
The Chocolate War by Robert Cormier
  • A high school freshman discovers the devastating
consequences of refusing to join in the school's
annual fund raising drive and arousing the wrath
    of the school bullies.

9

Nothing But The Truth
10
Nothing But The Truth by Avi
  • Students, teachers, parents, and the national
media become involved when ninth-grader Philip
Malloy is suspended from school for singing "The
Star Spangled Banner." A remarkable novel, told
in documentary style, by the award-winning author
of many contemporary young adult novels.
