Title: Setting Goals
1AVID Standard 1.2 Plan for ongoing personal and
academic development
2Jim Carrey and His Goal
One night in 1987, when the 25-year-old Jim
Carrey was a struggling Canadian comic trying to
make his name in Los Angeles, he drove his old
Toyota up to Mulholland Drive in the Hollywood
hills. Sitting there and dreaming of the future,
Carrey wrote himself a check for 10 million. He
dated it Thanksgiving 1995 and added the
notation, "for acting services rendered." By
the time 1995 actually rolled around, his
rambunctious goofball roles in "Ace Ventura Pet
Detective," "The Mask" and "Dumb Dumber" had
yielded worldwide grosses of 550 million, and
superstar's asking price was up to 20 million
per picture. But by that time, Carrey no longer
had the check anyway -- in July 1994, he had
slipped it into his father's pocket as he lay in
his coffin.

3No Map?
- Have you ever had to drive somewhere without
directions and got lost? - Did you ever get there?
- Were you frustrated?
- Did it take longer to get there than it should
have?
4How are goals like a map?
5The Power of Setting Goals
- In 1953, the graduating seniors at Yale
University were asked, How many of you have a
clear, specific set of goals, with a written plan
for achievement? - Less than 3 did! Twenty years later the
graduates were interviewed again. The 3 who had
written goals appeared to be happier. - The 3 of people who had written goals
- were worth more financially than the other
- 97 combined!
6Effective Goals are S.M.A.R.T.
- Specific
- Measureable
- Attainable
- Relevant
- Time-bound
- Examples

G.P.A - By the time I turn 25, I will own a 2,000 square
foot home in Menifee - By September 30, 2016, I will be enrolled at the
UCLA
7Possible Lifetime Goals

- I will walk on the moon next year
- By the time Im 30, I will make a 6 figure
income. - Within 6 years of graduating from high school I

and apply to NASA.
9Long Term vs. Short Term Goals
