Title: Year 1 Literacy

1
Year 1 - Literacy
  • Phonics, Spellings the new Framework for
    Literacy

2
The New Framework
  • The New Framework for Literacy Mathematics has
been in place since the beginning of term.
  • Much of the content in the Year 1 curriculum
remains the same but there has been some change
in the sequence of teaching lessons, and there is
now an emphasis on phonics to improve reading,
comprehension writing skills in light of the
Rose Review the development of early reading
    writing

3
The teaching sequence
  • The teaching sequence follows a set pattern of
lessons with each unit of work being covered over
    a two week period.
  • The sequence includes a weekly grammar lesson
which will be taught every Monday. They will
focus on introducing or developing skills that
will then be incorporated into subsequent reading
writing activities during the literacy lessons

4
Phonics in Y1
  • There will be a daily whole class15min phonics
    lesson
  • The children will initially revise the Jolly
    Phonics programme covered in reception
  • When they know all 42 phonemes they will practise
their skills of blending to decode (read)
    encode (spell) simple words
  • The children will work through the different
phases of phonics as identified by the Letters
    Sounds document from the DFES

5
Handwriting
  • Handwriting will be taught using the PenPals
    scheme
  • A different letter will be taught each week
  • Please encourage your child to hold their pencil
correctly at home and use the correct letter
    formation (see accompanying sheet)

6
Spelling Homework
  • A new spelling programme is being introduced this
year to compliment the Jolly Phonics scheme used
    in Reception
  • The words in this scheme are largely grouped
according to word families (words which follow
the same spelling pattern or word endings) and
    are spelt phonetically
  • Once every six weeks (1/2 term) a list of
keywords will be sent home to learn (these are
common words which are not spelt phonetically,
instead they have to be learned using the look,
    cover, write, check method
  • 10 words will be sent home on a Monday to
    practise and learn at home.
  • Spellings will be tested in school on a Friday by
    the class teacher.
  • New spellings will be sent home the following
    Monday.

7
Reading
  • The graded reading scheme continues into Year 1
  • Your child should be heard twice a week in school
  • 1 by the class teacher / teaching assistant
  • 1 by a PRA
  • Books will only be changed in school when your
child has read with an adult
  • Please continue to read regularly with your child
at home write relevant comments in the
    home/school book
  • Please do encourage your child to read other
books at home not just their school reading book!
    Visit the library etc.
  • Please help your child to develop not just their
reading skills but their comprehension skills
too. Ask them questions about the book, or a
character, or ask them to tell you something they
    liked about the book
  • Usually 8-12 books on one level are read before a
child moves on but this could vary depending upon
    your childs rate of progress
  • The Class teacher will decide when your child
moves onto the next level, please do not ask a
PRA to do this for you!

8
Library Books
  • Library sessions are weekly and will be on a
  • Your child has the opportunity to select one book
of their choice (fiction or non-fiction) from our
    school library
  • They can take it home to share with you need to
return it the following week on the correct day
  • If your child forgets to bring their library
book, they will not be able to choose another
one. They will have to wait until the following
week to return it and select another.
  • Please encourage your child to look after their
library books so others can enjoy them too!

9
Mathematics
  • Maths will be taught under the new framework
the curriculum will be covered in two week units
    of work, similar to Literacy.
  • The focus this year will be on encouraging
children to use and apply their knowledge of
numbers with an emphasis on problem solving
  • Maths homework will be sent home on a weekly
    basis on a
  • This will typically be a worksheet and the topic
will have been previously covered in class that
week eg. Addition, shape, measuring etc.
  • Once every half term (6wks) a maths game will be
sent home instead of a worksheet. Please play
this with your child and return to school the
    following week.

10

now required to participate in at least 2hrs of
    PE per week
  • PE is timetabled to take place in the hall,
outside playground through the Take 10
    programme
  • PE will be on a
  • Your child will need to have their named PE kit
