Maze Procedure

• By James Cox in the 1980s
• The maze procedure involves numerous atrial
  incisions that form a maze-like pattern, with the
  scar tissue providing a conduction block to
  interrupt propagation of the arrhythmia.
• Require cardiopulmonary bypass.
• Most often in conjunction with mitral-valve
  surgery.

• Atrial appendages are excised.
• The pulmonary veins isolated.
• A lesion between an inferior pulmonary vein and
  the mitral annulus and the inferior vena cava.
