Cerebral Cortex
  • Surface of the brain - LOBES
  • Greek for bark - sheet of tissue that makes the
    outer layer
  • Controls thinking, language, perception, sensation

3
Cerebellum
  • Latin for little brain
  • Located behind the spinal cord
  • Controls voluntary movement such as balance,
    coordination, and muscle movement

4
Limbic System
  • Connect the cortex to other parts of the brain
  • Important to basic brain functions
  • 4 parts

5
Thalamus
  • Transmits incoming sensory information (except
    smell) to the cortex

6
Hypothalamus
  • Located underneath thalamus
  • Controls body temperature, hunger, thirst, and
    sexual behavior and aggression
  • Regulates many hormonal functions

7
Amygdala
  • Important to basic emotions such as aggression
    and fear
  • Research with lesioning the amygdala in animals

8
Hippocampus
  • Important to memory function
  • Active in forming lasting memories

9
Brain Stem
  • Oldest and innermost region
  • 4 parts

10
Reticular Formation
  • Nerve fibers that run through the brain stem and
    limbic system
  • Relay network between parts of brain
  • Important to arousal and attention

11
Medulla
  • Next to the spinal cord
  • Contains axons that stretch to the heart and
    other internal organs
  • Regulate basic bodily functions - Controls blood
flow, breathing, swallowing and heart rate

12
Pons
  • Located above the medulla beside the reticular
    formation
  • Provides connections between cortex and
    cerebellum
  • Controls sleep

13
Pituitary Gland
  • Master hormone gland controlled by the
    hypothalamus
  • Pea sized structure located at the base of the
    brain
  • Regulates growth
