Title: Types of concept maps:

1
Types of concept maps
  • Spider map Central concept

Diagnostics
Patho
MS
Risk Factors
Neuro
Psycho-social
VonRecklinghausen Syndrome
Integument
Cardiac
GU
Pulmonary
GI
2
Advantages of Spider Map
  • Easy to configure.
  • All data is organized around a unified theme
    (diagnosis).
  • Easy to read.

3
Disadvantages of Spider Map
  • Difficult to show relationships without making
the map very messy and hard to read.
  • Doesnt allow for integration of all data and the
    relationships among data.

4
  • Hierarchical/Chronological

Risk Factors
Patho
Diagnostics
MI CPK, EKG, pain, cardiac assess
Neuro
GI
GU
Pulmonary
Integument
MS
PS
5
Advantages to Hierarchical or
Chronological Maps
  • Follow a definite pattern.
  • Most general data is located at the top and moves
    to the most specific.
  • Easy to read.

6
Disadvantages to Hierarchical or
Chronological Maps
  • Shows no interrelationship between data.
  • Does not allow for critical thinking and thus
    limited problem solving.

7
  • Flow chart linear fashion

Risk Factors
Patho
Diagnostics
Medical Diagnosis
System Assessment -Neuro -Cardiac -Pulmonary -GI -
GU -Integument -MS -PS
8
Advantages of Flow Chart
  • Easy to read.
  • Information is organized in a logical, ordered
    fashion.

9
Disadvantages of Flow Chart
  • Very minimal data noted on concept map.
  • Lack of critical thinking and clinical reasoning
    skills used.
  • Usually very incomplete.

10
  • Systems map inputs/outputs
  • Smoking
    Chronic HTN?Lisinopril 5mg qd
    Family Hx CAD

  • Isosorbide MN 30mg qd
  • Decreased HDL? Lipitor 10mg qd
    Decreased elasticity of vessels
    ?altered genes
  • Increased catecholamines
    Vasoconstriction ? Nitrostat 0.4mg prn
  • Increased platelet adhesiveness
    Tearing effects on arteries
  • Accelerated atherosclerosis

  • Plavix 75 mg qd Coronary Artery Disease? Hx
    stent placement, EF 64
  • Reports no pain
    Reocclusion of RCA? CK-MB 2.9
    HR 58, NSR, BP 141/68, S1, S2
  • Full ROM Fentanyl 50mcg prn
    Trop.
    lt0.04 Radial, DP, PT pulses
    2 bilat.
  • Bedrest Versed 1 mg prn
    PTCA with brachytherapy
Cap. Refill lt 2sec, no JVD

  • for RCA 95 occlusion
  • Resp. unlabored, Clear bilat. O2 _at_ 2L/NC
  • SpO2 96, RR 18
Skin pink, intact, no bleeding or
    facial grimace/hand grasps
    bilat.

  • hematoma _at_ left femoral
    site, PERRL, MAEW,
    AAO X 3, wife _at_
  • BS X 4 quads, no N/V, ice chips only
left radial IV site without redness,
    bedside
  • UO 200cc clear yellow by foley
    swelling or drainage, no edema

11
Advantages of Systems Map
  • Very complete.
  • Includes all data on the map and shows many
    relationships between the data.
  • Uses critical thinking skills along with problem
    solving skills.
  • Links theory and practice very well.

12
Disadvantages of Systems Map
  • With critical clients map can get very involved
and sometimes difficult to read due to the number
    of relationships noted.
  • Takes more time to complete.
