What type of relationship do you have with your
parents?
  • The 5th commandment says Honor thy father and
    mother and your days will be long
  • Children obey your parents in the Lord for this
    is right. Eph 61-3
  • The key words are "honor" and "obey". There is no
    time limit on this. God does not free a child
    from this responsibility simply because he has
    now gone to college or is married.
  • Honor- high regard of great respect given

Mutual Respect
  • Parents have the God-given authority and we must
    give them the respect that they deserve
  • One way to honor your parents is by respecting
    them and the decisions they make?
  • How do you show respect?
  • The father of the righteous will greatly
    rejoice he who begets a wise son will be glad in
    him. Let your father and mother be glad. Let her
    who bore you rejoice. Proverbs 2322

Obedience
  • Supporting them in their decisions rather than
    following them bitterly
  • No time limit
  • My son keep your fathers commandment, and
    forsake not your mothers teaching. Bind them
    upon your heart always. Tie them about your neck.
    When you walk, they will lead you. Proverbs
    620-22

Was Our Lord Jesus obedient to His parents?
  • YES!
  • After three days they found him in the temple,
    sitting among teachers, listening to them and
    asking them questions and all who heard him were
    amazed at His understanding and his answers. And
    when they saw him they were astonished and his
    mother said to him, Son, why have you treated us
    so? Behold, your father and I have been looking
    for you anxiously.Luke 251

Responsibility
  • The duty of a parent is to plant seeds of wisdom
    in you and it is your responsibility to utilize
    it

    when he is old he will not depart from it

  • Our parents goal is to shape us into righteous
    citizens of this world

  • Building a solid relationship with your parents
    is an ongoing process that requires time and
    patience
  • Let go of distracting emotions such as anger,
    frustration, and disappointment and focus on
    communication
  • Sometimes a mutual understanding will not always
    be reached but ultimately your parents have the
    final say
  • "Listen, my son, to your father's instruction and
