Rublev Colours Watercolors are made with the same
pigments used by watercolor masters of the 17th
to 19th centuries. The colors are genuine single
pigment paints available individually in tubes
and cakes.
3
Permanence Most Rublev Colours Watercolors are
rated I or II, according to ASTM lightfastness
standard, showing little or no change in
watercolors. Those of lightfastness III category
may be sufficiently lightfast if they are
provided with extra protection from UV
light. Staining Staining is the characteristic
that makes color difficult to remove from paper
after it has been applied. Less staining colors
can be removed almost entirely when wet or when
rewetted and then lifted with a clean, wet brush
and blotted up with a paper towel. Staining
depends in large part on the paper and the
particle size of the pigment. Staining is
increased by the use of dispersants, because they
act to embed pigment particles in the fibers of
paper, dulling the finished color. While most
brands of watercolors contain dispersants, Rublev
Colours Watercolors do not so staining is
minimized.
4
Smalt Full Pan
Rublev Colours Smalt is an intense deep blue
color used by watercolorists in the 18th and 19th
centuries and used in painting since at least the
16th century, although it has been found in
paintings much earlier than that time.
5
Vivianite Half Pan
Rublev Colours Vivianite (Blue Ochre) is an inky
blue color from the natural mineral, Vivianite,
used in historical painting. Our vivianite comes
from bogs around the Moscow region, and has a
dark blue masstone with a smokey blue undertone.
6
Verditer Blue Shell
Rublev Colours Verditer Blue is a historic blue
watercolor that is semi-transparent and moderate
staining. Verditer blue is artificial basic
copper carbonate, which was popular in distemper
and water-based paint during the 17th to 19th
centuries.
7
Cobalt Blue Half Pan
Cobalt blue, discovered in 1704 or 1705, is
generally regarded as the first of the modern
colors. In truth it is something of an anomaly,
appearing well before the blossoming of chemistry
as a science in the late 18th century. 4 oz vol.
