ESTUDIOS A J.K. Javits Grant designed to merge
the International Baccalaureate Primary Years
Programme with existing dual language programs in
Texas.

ESTUDIOS Through this grant TEA provides
financial, technical and administrative support
to 3 Texas elementary schools with dual language
programs as they begin to implement the Primary
Years Programme.

What is the Primary Years Programme? The
Primary Years Programme (PYP), for students aged
3 to 12, focuses on the development of the whole
child, in the classroom but also in the world
outside, through other environments where
children learn. It offers a framework that meets
childrens several needs academic, social,
physical, emotional and cultural. Throughout

  • The Texas Education Agency (TEA) will
  • Commit matching grant funds in the amount of
    59,300 in year 1, 109,530 in year 2, and
    87,814 in year 3 of the grant
  • Award grants in the amount of 25,000 per year
    for each year of the three-year project to 3 5
    elementary schools
  • Oversee and facilitate all aspects the project
    and
  • Fulfill USDE obligations.

  • Work with the Bilingual Mentor and participating
    teachers to modify PYP curriculum and planner for
    a dual language delivery system

  • Assist campuses in providing meaningful parent
    training opportunities

    teachers as needed

    for and identify demonstration academies

    (NABE) will provide leadership and assistance
    through a Bilingual Mentor who will
  • Provide bilingual training as needed for
    participating campuses
  • Work with PYP Mentors and participating teachers
    to modify PYP curriculum and planners into a dual
    language delivery system
  • Assist in modifying PYP materials for
    presentation to parents in a dual language
    format
  • Work with the ESTUDIOS team to develop criteria
    for and identify demonstration academies and
  • Work with the ESTUDIOS team in project evaluation
    and improvement.

  • Participating districts and campuses will
  • Commit local funds in the amount of 5000 in year
    1, 7500 in year 2, and 10,000 in year 3 of the
    grant
  • Identify a campus ESTUDIOS team which includes
  • A PYP Coordinator
  • An Administrator
  • Lead teachers from each grade level
  • A Specialist
  • Send the ESTUDIOS team to PYP Level 1, PYP Level
    2, and PYP Level 3 training

  • Ensure that all teachers are trained in the PYP,
    GT education, portfolio assessment, and the
    Performance Standards Project
  • Ensure that all LPAC members are trained in GT
    education
  • Provide a variety of parent training on the PYP
    and dual language instruction
  • Work with the PYP and Bilingual Mentors to modify
    PYP curriculum and planners for a dual language
    delivery system
  • Develop PYP units and lessons, including
    demonstration lessons for teacher training
    purposes

  • Submit PYP Authorization Application A to IBNA in
    May 2006 and Application B in May 2007
  • Participate in the Performance Standards Project
    by year 3 of the grant
  • Provide requested data for ESTUDIOS evaluation
    purposes and
  • Conduct on-going evaluation and improvement of
    ESTUDIOS implementation.
