- The current event that I chose is about a
serpent, Titanoboa. This looked like a very
fascinating snake. I also chose it because of
all of the amazing facts about it! I was really
amazed about when it lived, 58 million years ago,
which was a very long time ago! - The snake was discovered in 2010 on an
expedition by a team of international scientists
led by Jonathan Bloch, a University of Florida
vertebrate paleontologist, and Carlos Jaramillo,
a paleobotanist from the Smithsonian Tropical
Research Institute in Panama. The serpent,
Titanoboa, is the biggest snake on record and it
lived neotropical rainforests 58 million years
ago. This huge snake was 13 meters (42 feet)
long! It weighed 1,140 kilograms (2,510 pounds)!
They estimated how much it weighed based on the
size and length of its vertebral column. A
vertebral column is your backbone, spine, or
spinal cord. University Bloomington geologist,
David Polly, is the one who analyzed the monster
snake fossil. He said that the thickness of the
huge snake would have come up to your hips! - I was amazed with how heavy Titanoboa was,
(2,510 pounds)! I also found out that the
thickness of the snake would have come up to your
hips when laying flat on the ground! The thing
that shocked me the most was how big the snake
was (42 feet long)!
