PURPORT Human society is similar to any other
animal society, but to elevate men from the
animal status, the above-mentioned divisions are
created by the Lord for the systematic
development of Krsna consciousness. The
tendency of a particular man toward work is
determined by the modes of material nature which
he has acquired. Such symptoms of life, according
to the different modes of material nature, are
described in the Eighteenth Chapter of this book.
A person in Krsna consciousness, however, is
above even the brahmans

Guiding Verse for Regular Varnashram
  • Visnu Purana (3.8.9)
  • Varnasrama caravata purusena parah puman visnur
    aradhyate pantha nanyat tat-tosa-haranam
  • "One can worship the Supreme Personality of
Godhead, Vishnu, by proper discharge of the
principles of varna and ashrama. There is no
alternative to pacifying the Lord by execution of
the principles of the varnashrama system.
  • Vishnu worship is the ultimate aim of human life.
Those who take the license of married life for
sense enjoyment must also take the responsibility
to satisfy the Supreme Personality of Godhead,
Vishnu, and the first stepping-stone is the
    varnashrama-dharma system. Varnashrama-dharma is
the systematic institution for advancing in
worship of Vishnu. However, if one directly
engages in the process of devotional service to
the Supreme Personality of Godhead, it may not be
necessary to undergo the disciplinary system of
varnashrama-dharma. The other sons of Brahma, the
Kumaras, directly engaged in devotional service,
and thus they had no need to execute the
    principles of varnashrama-dharma.

Explanation of Pendulum Theory

We are using a pendulum to show, the Center as the religious ideals practised during the times of various personalities mentioned.
Throughout historical times, the society was run with Vishnu Worship in the center known as Varnashram Dharma sometimes known as Sanatan Dharma. However according to various negative elements in the society, Different philosophies are temporarily introduced to bring peace in the society, until the real Sanatan Dharma is introduced again by qualified agents of God of God Himself B.Gita 4.(7-8)
19
20
Description of the following slides
  • When there is a decline of religious principals,
the Supreme Lord personally comes or sends his
    bonafide representative to re-establish the
religion and annihilate the miscreants. B.G.
    4.(7-8)
  • However, during the time before Lord Buddha's
advent the sinful people were using the Vedas to
justify mass animal killing. The pendulum moved
away from the central position, to the left, when
Lord Buddha 'temporarily' denied the Vedas and
established voidism to stop animal killing.
  • Then we see that the Vedas needed to be
re-established so Sankaracharya brought in one
part of the Vedas, (impersonalism), of the whole
system bringing the Pendulum in one part of the
    middle section.
  • Then Vaisnavas acharyas came to establish bhakti,
the pendulum then swung over to the right.
  • Srila Prabhupada made Bhakti available to the
Whole World by bringing it to the West and
His glorious disciples helped Him to spread
the Message of Lord Caitanya. (who are still
    doing now).
  • Srila Prabhupada wants to fully establish
the Daivi Varnashram Dharma to Re-establish the
Balance in the Religion (Full middle position
with Krsna Deities and the Holy Names in the
Center). This has never been done before. It
has always been Vishnu in the Center.) This
is most Unique phenomenon in the history of
the Creation this Daivi Varnshram Dharma.
  • We need to Re-establish this Daivi Varnashram
Dharma and bring the Pendulum in Middle
    Balance.

SB 11.17.50 One in the gr?hastha order of life
should daily worship the sages by Vedic study,
the forefathers by offering the mantra svadha,
the demigods by chanting svaha, all living
entities by offering shares of one's meals, and
human beings by offering grains and water. Thus
considering the demigods, sages, forefathers,
living entities and human beings to be
manifestations of My potency, one should daily
perform these five sacrifices.
PURPORT The Lord again discusses the duties of
those in the household order of life. Obviously,
the five ritualistic daily sacrifices mentioned
here are meant for those who are not pure
devotees of the Lord and who thus have to
counteract their exploitation of material nature
by the abovementioned sacrifices. The
International Society for Krishna Consciousness
(ISKCON) is training householders, sannyasis,
brahmacaris and vanaprasthas to engage
twenty-four hours a day in the loving service of
the Lord. Those who are full-time missionary
workers in ISKCON have no further obligations or
sacrifices to perform, as confirmed in the

Varnashram Debt
As soon as a person is born he is indebted to Devas, Rsi, Forefathers, All Human Beings, All Living Entities for all the necessities of life. Therefore he has to perform all these yajnas or he is incurring sins. Moreover simply by his existance he is sinning everyday every moment therefore he has to perform Yajnas to counteract the Sins. Srimad-Bhagavatam (11.20.9) tavat karman?i kurvita na nirvidyeta yavata mat-katha-sravan?adau va sraddha yavan na jayate "As long as one is not satiated by fruitive activity and has not awakened his taste for devotional service by hearing and chanting about the Supreme Lord, one has to act according to the regulative principles of the Vedic injunctions." The conclusion is that one who has fully surrendered to the devotional service of the Supreme Lord is a first-class human being. However, if one foolishly neglects the lotus feet of the Supreme Lord and instead accepts the temporary material body to be everything, then one must certainly perform elaborate sacrifices.

Prayers by Manus and others about Varnashrama
Dharma
Further resources from
Vedicpedia.Among the dharma-sastras (category of
scriptures dealing with social and religious
rules) one can find very elaborate treatment of
the varnas and asramas with their roles and
duties in the Manu-samhita, the lawbook of
humanity (SB 3.22.38) "In reply to questions
asked by certain sages, he Svayambhuva Manu,
out of compassion for all living entities, taught
the diverse sacred duties of men in general and
the different varnas and asramas." (SB
7.8.48)"All the Manus offered their prayers as
follows As Your order carriers, O Lord, we, the
Manus, are the law-givers for human society, but
because of the temporary supremacy of this great
demon, Hiranyakasipu, our laws for maintaining
varnasrama-dharma were destroyed. O Lord, now
that You have killed this great demon, we are in
our normal condition. Kindly order us, Your
eternal servants, what to do now." (SB
5.22.4)"According to the system of four varnas
and four asramas, people generally worship the
Supreme Personality of Godhead, Narayana, who is
situated as the sun-god. With great faith they
worship the Supreme Personality as the Supersoul
according to ritualistic ceremonies handed down
in the three Vedas, such as agnihotra and similar
higher and lower fruitive acts, and according to
the process of mystic yoga. In this way they very
easily attain the ultimate goal of life."
(Gradual process) (SB 7.12.16)"By
practicing in this way, whether one be in the
brahmacari-asrama, grhastha-asrama,
vanaprastha-asrama or sannyasa-asrama,
  • one must always realize the all-pervading
presence of the Supreme Lord, for in this way it
is possible to understand the Absolute Truth."
  • (SB 10.24.20)The brahmana maintains his
life by studying and teaching the Vedas, the
member of the royal order by protecting the
earth, the vaisya by trade, and the sudra by
    serving the higher, twice-born classes.
  • (SB 11.18.47) "Those who are followers of this
    varnasrama system accept religious principles
according to authorized traditions of proper
conduct. When such varnasrama duties are
dedicated to Me in loving service, they award the
supreme perfection of life." (Gradual process)
  • Goals (Srimad Bhagavatam 7.11.2)"Maharaja
Yudhisthira said My dear lord, I wish to hear
from you about the principles of religion by
which one can attain the ultimate goal of
life--devotional service. I wish to hear about
the general occupational duties of human society
and the system of social and spiritual
    advancement known as varnasrama-dharma."
  • (SB 1.2.13)"O best among the twice-born, it is
therefore concluded that the highest perfection
one can achieve by discharging the duties
prescribed for one's own occupation according to
caste divisions and orders of life is to please

Srila Prabhupada on Manu Samhita
  • Quotes from Srila Prabhupada about Manu Samhita.
  • SB Canto 7, Chapter 8, Text 48 - Manu gave the
law known as Manu-samhita, which is full of
directions based on varna and asrama concerning
how to live as a human being.
  • BG Chapter 16, Text 8 Actually the qualified
bramanas are meant to give direction to the kings
for proper administration in terms of the
    scriptures like the Manu-samhita and
    Dharma-sastras of Parasara.
  • SB Canto 2, Chapter 1, Text 36 The Manu-samhita
is the standard lawbook for humanity, and every
human being is advised to follow this great book
    of social knowledge.
  • BG Chapter 2, Text 21The teacher cannot
manufacture rules against the principles of
    revealed scriptures. The revealed scriptures,
like Manu-samhita and similar others, are
considered the standard books to be followed by
    human society. The Srimad-Bhagavatam also
affirms that one should follow in the footsteps
of great devotees and that is the way of progress
on the path of spiritual realization.
  • BG Chapter 16, Text 7 -As for behaviour, there
are many rules and regulations guiding human
behaviour, such as the Manu-samhita, which is the
law of the human race. Even up to today, those
who are Hindu follow the Manu-samhita.
  • SB Canto 2, Chapter 13, Text 9 - The scriptures
like Manu-samhita and other authorized books of
the great sages were guiding principles for
    ruling the subjects
  • The standard welfare codes are already there in
the Manu-samhita and other Vedic literatures.
  • SB Canto 3, Chapter 13, Text 12Brahma is the
representative of the Supreme Personality of
Godhead, and Manu is the representative of
Brahma. Similarly, all other kings on different
planets of the universe are representatives of
Manu. One who knows this secret, as disclosed
here in the version of Brahma, is the perfect
administrative head. One who does not know this
    is a show-bottle administrator.
  • SB Canto 8, Chapter 1, Text 16 - Svayambhuva Manu
is the leader of mankind, and he has given a book
called Manu-samhita to guide human society.
  • Science of Self-Realization Chapter 6 - The
brahminical culture and the brahminical brain is
the standard of Vedic civilization. The
Manu-smrti is an example of the standard
brahminical culture. The law given by Manu is so
perfect that it can be applicable for all time.
It is stated in Sanskrit to be tri-kaladau, which
means 'good for the past, present and
future.'Teachings of Lord Kapila Chapter 6
Dharma means, 'the laws given by God' Dharmam tu
saksad bhagavat-pranitam. The laws are given by
Bhagavan and are written in books like
    Manu-samhita and other Vedic literatures
  • Adi-lila Chapter 2, Text 91-92 - Manvantara -
the regulative principles for living beings who
desire to achieve perfection in human life - the
rules of Manu, as described in the Manu-samhita,
guide the way to such perfection.

Practical Examples of Daivi Varnashram Dharma
Examples of Pure Devotees who showed by
examples.
King Priyavrata Did not want to rule the
Kingdom and follow the Varnashram . So His
father S. Manu brought Lord Brahma to request
him to do His Duty and also Perform
Devotional Service remembering Lord Krsna.
Maharaj Ambarish was Ruling his Kingdom
Following all the Rules of Varnashram from
Dharma Sastras. Fully devoted to Lord Krsna
in performing All Nine Kinds of Devotional
Service.
Lord Krsna served as King and performed all
morning duties of a Grahastha, went to work
and also took care of his family duties
of even taking his wives on holidays by
caravan to Hastinapur and bringing flowers
for them etc. He performed many such duties.
Bhishma is a brahmachari but because of his
promise of taking care of the seat of
Hastinapur, he performed all the necessary
duties as the advisor and wellwisher of the
Kingdom. Yet he had special relationship
with Lord Krsna.
Prahlad when he became the King and ruled
his fathers Kingdom, he followed all the
rules of Varnashram same as Dhruva Maharaj
King Janaka is celebrated as Mahajan, He is
even mentioned in the B.Gita. Lord Rama took
his advice which in the forest, showing how
to respect an elder.
Lord Rama showed every aspect of various
relationships in Varnashram Dharma that is why
He is called Maryada Purushottam. That is
why Ramayan is very important to illustrate
those duties among various family members
and others in the Society.
Srila Prabhupada Showed us how to live in
a grahastha life by holding B.gita classes
in his home, preaching, writing, studying, and
taking care of all his families needs and
marrying all his children. Bhaktivinod Thakur
had 11 children. He got them married except
ONE, and had a job and performed
devotional service with full dedication.

Proofs of People practiced Varnashram Dharma
  • Varnashram is practiced in Spiritual World.
  • Devotees follow the rules of etiquette and
relationships among each other and Lord Krsna
according to their Varna and Ashram.
  • Great Kings (Rajarshis)
  • Lord Rama, Ambarish, Patraparudra, Prithu Mahara
    j,Priyavrata, Nimi, Rantideva, Sibi maharaj
even Lord Krsna in Dwarka and all Rajarshis.
  • Mahajans - svayambhur naradah sambhuh, kumarah
    kapilo manuhprahlado janako bhismo, balir
vaiyasakir vayamTranslation and I myself know
the real religious principle. My dear servants,
this transcendental religious principle, which is
known as bhagavata-dharma, or surrender unto the
Supreme Lord and love for Him, is uncontaminated
by the material modes of nature. 7-8 ghrasthas
Brahma, Siva, S. Manu, Prahalad, Kapila, Vyasa,
    Bali, King Janaka Bhisma (unique)
  • These are pure devotees who followed Varnashram
Dharma while living in the Material world
that is why they are called Mahajans they
show the path of going back to Godhead by
    living in this world.
  • Brahmacharis - Narada, Kumaras, Kapila, Sukadeva
  • Pure Devotees also followed Varnashram
    dharma
  • Srila Prabhupada, Bhaktivinod Thakur, Advaita
    acharya, Srinivas Thakur, including Lord
    Caitanya.
  • Even demons Followed the Varnashram Dharma
  • Ravana, Jarasandha, Kamsa.

Varnashram in Spiritual World
  • They exhibit rules, duties, obligations in
    Varnashram Dharma
  • Their relationships are perfectly in harmony
with their particular varna and ashram.
Therefore we have the similar system in
    the material world.
  • The kings like Kamsa may not be there but
there is mention of them. Everyone is Krishna
Conscious and serving Lord Krsna according
    to their rasa with Him.
  • E.g. How the parents relate to their
    children
  • How the married couples supposed to behave
among each other and in front of their
    elders.
  • What are the duties of grandparents
  • What are the duties of sons etc.
  • Seasonal Lilas Honored by Lord Chaitanya
Following the Moods of Vraja CC. Adi Chap 10,
    78-79 Madhya Chap 15,16
  • Excerpts from Raghunandana Gosvami's Gauranga
Champu, Ch, 29, 30, 31 showing how Radharani is
visiting Barsana (her parents house several
times in a year) for various festivals and
seasonal changes and she receives various
gifts from her parents, according to Vedic
Calender, this system is still followed by
the Hindus for their brides and daughters.
Many such rules and obligations are still
followed by the people from Vedic background.
This shows that varnashram practiced here
is getting the soul ready for serving in
the spiritual world in the similar system.
  • Every one is following the Rules of Ashram
  • Grahastha
  • Brahmachari
  • Vanaprastha
  • Sanyasi

When to Gradually Give up Varnashram Principals
  • Bhaktivinod Thakur showed by example and wrote
that famous song. On this day, I will say
Goodbye to my morning bathing rituals, I bid
farewell to my forefathers and beg their
forgiveness for not offering pinda. These
were the duties of Varnashram Dharma which he
was giving up when he felt confident that
Lord Krsna will protect him from all sins
of NOT following them at the time of Full
Surrender. Up until then he was following
them. (He is a pure devotee but showing us
the stages of surrender - Bhakti).
  • Then he turns around and says that my
dear Lord from this day onwards, all these
family members, house, and my body, mind
and senses are yours, I am yours. I will
take care of them on your behalf. (This
is showing, doing duties but his mind fully
    surrendered to Lord Krsna.)
  • So he never really gave those up but
instead Changed his consciousness. That he
is doing all those duties to please the
Lord. In other words he is following all
the principals of Varnashram so that there
is NO disharmony in his society and no
confusion among his social circle and also
    persueing Bhakti.
  • So he is showing the Bhakti is internal
process and externally one carries on with
the duties of dharma by following the rules
    of humanity which means varnashram.
  • When one reaches the stage of Bhava or Prema and
becomes fully absorbed in asta-kaliya lila by
smaranam (and one is completely off the bodily
    platform)

Iso 1 Everything animate or inanimate that is
within the universe is controlled and owned by
the Lord. One should therefore accept only those
things necessary for himself, which are set aside
as his quota, and one should not accept other
things, knowing well to whom they belong.

Iso 2One may aspire to live for hundreds of
years if he continuously goes on working in that
way, for that sort of work will not bind him to
the law of karma. There is no alternative to this
way for man.

Brahma Samhita Quote
  • BS 5.59 The highest devotion is attained by slow
degrees by the method of constant endeavor for
    self-realization with the help scriptural
evidence, theistic conduct and perseverance in
    practice.
  • PURPORT
  • Evidence the devotional scriptures, e.g.,
Srimad-Bhagavatam, the Vedas, the Puran?as, the
Gita, etc. Theistic conduct the conduct of
pious persons (sadhus) who are pure devotees and
the conduct of those pious persons who practice
devotion to Godhead actuated by spontaneous love.
Practice to learn about the ten basic
principles (dasa-mula) from the sastras and on
receiving the name of Hari as laid down in the
same, embodying the name, form, quality and
activity of the Divinity. to practice the
chanting of the name by serving Him night and
day. By this are meant study of the sastras and
association with the sadhus. The tenfold offense
to holy name ceases by serving the name of Hari
    and simultaneously practicing pious conduct.
"Practice" is no other than following the mode of
service of the name practiced by the sadhus
without offense. By perseverance in such practice
and devotion characterized by love which is the
fruit of spiritual endeavor makes her appearance
in the pure essence of the soul.

Rules, Duties Obligations
  • -While in the material world one has to perform
his Duties Obligations according to Vedic Rules
towards all his Relationships otherwise one
    incurs sin.
  • -These Rules, Duties and Obligations are chalked
out in Supplementary Vedic literatures called
    Dharma Sastras.
  • 4th offense is to disrespect the Vedic literature
    ---
  • -We have Vedic Calender, Samskars Acharyas
Instructions on Dharma Sastras to observe these
    various rules.
  • Srimad Bhagavatam is full of these instructions

B.Gita Quote
  • BG 4.14 There is no work that affects Me nor do
I aspire for the fruits of action. One who
understands this truth about Me also does not
become entangled in the fruitive reactions of
    work.
  • BG 4.15 All the liberated souls in ancient times
acted with this understanding of My
    transcendental nature. Therefore you should
perform your duty, following in their footsteps.
