Getting to Know the Students

• We will form links to the real world.
• Is your student interested in art, music, movies,
  sports, the economy or science?

culture.

Getting to Know Your Students Math Teacher

• B.Sc. and MBA degrees from McGill University and
  a MAT (candidate) from FDU. I have additional
  graduate level course work in statistics.
• Worked in the multicultural global corporate
  sphere and can add relevance to our daily
  lessons.
• I have two children. At this stage in my life, I
  have the freedom to do what I really enjoy share
  knowledge and nurture young people.
• Before returning to the workplace, I spent many
  years volunteering in my childrens schools.

• I love taking pictures, movies,
• music, reading, nature and running.
• I am currently reading, To Infinity and Beyond A
  Cultural History of the Infinite, by Professor
  Eli Maor. Next on my list, Digital Fortress, by
  Dan Brown.

My Philosophy of Education

• I believe that education is the foundation of our
  meritocracy, that rigor and intellectual
  curiosity are at the base of this foundation and
  that we shortchange our young people if we demand
  anything less of them and ourselves as educators.
• I believe that a strong foundation in mathematics
  and science will allow students to confidently
  pursue higher learning and take charge of their
  futures.
• I believe it is important to incorporate
  appropriate technology into the classroom. Not
  only is it fun, it meets students in the
  electronic world in which they live.

Technology in the Classroom

• Students will be using graphing calculators.
• Students will be using computer/internet based
  manipulatives to help construct their
  understanding of mathematical concepts. The
  following are two examples
• Students will also be using non-electronic
  manipulatives where appropriate.

Classroom Procedures

• Raise your hand when you wish to speak or ask a
  question.
• When you are absent, it is your responsibility to
  find out what you missed and make up the missed
  work.
• When you enter the classroom, consult the Do
  Now instructions that are posted on the
  left-hand board.
• Check the assignment board
• Deadlines are closer than they appear.
• Homework and assignments are also posted in the
  Do the Math! newsletter.
• Be sure to sign-out on the board by the door if
  you need to leave the classroom for pull-out
  activity.

Grading

• Students grades will be based on homework and
  assignments, participation (this means asking
  questions) quizzes and tests.
• The distribution is a follows
• Homework 10
• Assignments 30
• Participation 20
• Quizzes and Tests 40
• Total 100
• Students will be keeping a grading log so that
  they can keep track of their own progress
  throughout the year.

• Key to success in this class is the students
  willingness to ask questions.
• Key to academic success is knowing what you
  know and knowing what you dont know.
• Students are self-conscious asking questions.
• Each Talk Back is one sheet of at least three,
  well considered questions.
• Ask Questions! Lots of Questions!

• I expect that every student behaves respectfully
  in class, of the teacher and the other students.
• I expect that every student follows the classroom
  procedures.
• I expect that every student participates in class
  discussions and that all homework and assignments
  are completed.
• I expect every student to succeed in this class.
