29
Recommended priorities for digitization
  • Topics1st tier
  • The environment and land use
  • Population groups from 1850 to the present
  • Transportation and industry
  • Major nineteenth- and twentieth century
conflicts--and the communities of conscience that
have reacted to war, injustice, and intolerance
  • Topics2nd tier
  • Economy
  • Politics and government
  • Technology, science, and medicine
  • Culture
  • Society

30
Recommended priorities for digitization
  • Materials
  • Historical sound and moving image documents
  • Primary sources that are outside the purview of
    current initiatives for newspapers, diaries,
    printed works, and census records
  • E.g., vital records, including birth and death
    records, land records, et al.

31
Digitization grant
  • Brochure in development designed by Cheryl Greer
  • Front
  • Interior (2)

32
Distributed print archive
  • Christy Roysdon and Sharon Wiles-Young of Lehigh
have been working diligently on this
  • Create distributed archive of print volumes for
all journals of select scientific societies
  • Archive is static, with agreed-upon final year
    for each society
  • Provide agreed-upon holdings information
  • Provide agreed-upon archival care and user access
  • Maintain archive until 2020

33
Distributed print archive
  • Initial project limited to journal runs from
  • American Chemical Society
  • American Institute of Physics
  • American Physical Society
  • For each proposed journal run, deep electronic
    archive available
  • American Chemical Society, 1879 to 1995
  • American Institute of Physics, rolling, currently
    1930-2002
  • American Physical Society (PROLA), 18932004

34
Summer meeting on distributed archive
  • 16 institutions expressed interest in the project
and submitted a census of their holdings
  • 10 institutions plus PALCI represented at August
    13 meeting at Lehigh University

35
Decisions at August meeting
  • IOP archive no longer part of initial project
  • Goal is 2 dark, 2 light archives
  • Environmental specifications apply to dark
    archive only
  • Access to light archives should reflect holding
    institutions access policies
  • Agreement goes to 2020, but with midterm review
    probably in 2014

36
Next steps
  • 2 teams created, one charged with securing light
archive for ACS, the other with securing light
    archive for AIP/APS
  • Agreement revised and recirculated
  • Christy and John are pursuing dark archive
    agreements

37
