3INTRODUCTION
Results from previous European Projects
(TARNIUMATEN)
- SENSNAT (1999-2000) - CEO Programme, JRC- Ispra
- EON2000 Research Directorate - Environment
Programme (2001-2004)
- SENSNAT ENQUIRY (1999)
- Questionnaire sent to 350 contacts (150 in
France) RETURNED within 2 months 35
questionnaires filled (30 from France) - 1/2 of them use GIS .widespread but not
systematic - GIS Mainly for cartographic purposes
- Cartography is a support of work (92 ), then to
decision (75 ) and finally for communication (69
). - Data-processing equipment with Internet access is
available for nearly 2/3 of the organisations
having answered.

CONCLUSIONS for France
- QUESTIONNAIRE
- too long, not enough based on practical needs.
Not enough returns from National Parks.
Importance of direct and permanent contacts. Real
interest on NATURE-GIS (as a pan-European Network)
- GIS
- Systematic use of GIS, not only for cartographic
purposes, but also for data analysis (clear
evolution within 2 years since EON2000 and
SENSNAT) - Mapinfo and Arcview most common software's
(influence of ATEN) - and clear Interest in producing own GI including
Medata and modelling tools.
- DATA Management
- Still low level of production (cost/training) of
Satellite imagery). Needs still important. - No clear metadata policy (local/regional work
only). Access policy still not lear (case by
case, under convention). Interest in getting
(free) information but not to provide it without
control
- NATURE-GIS, goals strategy and awareness actions
in France - Clear differences, objectives and means between
protected areas (NP, RP and NR) scale
probematicsobjectives .NGISgtprovide clear and
practical demonstration (accessing GI on-line) - Access/Share finalised data / Maps OK (idem
VECTOR layer running policy of ATEN 1 National
Parks 2 Regional Parks). But raw data/layer NO
(Still under property under specific
convention).
