Before the Internet

• Communication between businesses and networks
  were limited between the stations.
• Some networks have gateways or bridges between
  them, but these bridges were often limited or
  built for a single use

• Terminals were connected by long leased lines or
  telephone lines
• The progress of the internet being created was
  held up because of the Cold War but it was
  finally developed in the late 1980s.

• 1957 - USSR launches Sputnik the first earth
  satellite
• 1973 - The protocol TCP/IP was created
• 1974 - The term Internet was first used by Vint
  Cerf and Bob Kahn
• 1992-World Wide Web was released by CREN

The Transition towards the Internet

• There were too many networks to keep track of
• Vint Cerf found the hidden differences between
  network protocols
• TCP/IP was created so that any network could
  connect with each other

• The Communications Decency Act-
• Enacted Feb.8th- This law makes displaying
  "indecent" or "patently offensive" words or
  images on the Internet -- accessible to minors --
  punishable by a 250,000 fine and a two-year
  prison sentence

• Indecent- Not proper and fittingunseemly
• Obscene- Lawwhen judged by contemporary
  community standards, appeal to a prurient
  interest in sexand has no serious artistic,
  scientific, of social value
