Temporary Housing Options
  • Wesley Foundation
  • Foundation selling property to developer to
    build multi-story, multipurpose building for
Foundation use and to generate income from store
fronts and apartments. Project will not be
    completed until 2010.
  • Campus Meeting Room
  • Sigma Delta Tau used campus rooms for chapter
meetings until their house was completed.
  • Heritage Grove
  • Each building has 24, 2 bedroom/2 bathroom
    apartments. 480 per bedroom.
  • After filling 24 rooms, you have rights to
chapter house. Chapter room free if 48 rooms are
    filled.
  • Dorm Floor Option
  • Per groups discussion, this option is not
feasible to remain competitive among other groups.

Note There are currently two sorority houses
being rented on campus.
7
Vacant Properties
  • Lot adjacent to Delta Gamma
  • Lot adjacent to Kappa Alpha
  • Lots on Macomb, between College Park
  • Note These lots are not currently for sale

8
Cost for Building a New House
  • Estimate for a comfortable 40 person, suite
style, with adequate dining space, multiple
purpose rooms, and chapter room expected to run
230 per square foot, plus 10 for overrides and
    unexpected costs.
  • 12,000 square feet would provide nice house. 3-4
million to complete the job with furniture,
    fixtures, and equipment.
  • Delta Delta Delta Headquarters said baseline for
house for 78 at UF was 5.5 million without
    polish.
  • The average FSU sorority house sleeps 42 women

Future Planning
This survey was sent to all chapter presidents,
Panhellenic delegates, and chapter advisors via
email the weeks of July 1, 2007 and September 11,
2007. There were 16 responses in all. Responses
were kept confidential.
  • Do you consider your chapter size to be
    manageable?
  • Would you like your chapter to be larger, smaller
    or stay the same?
  • The majority of respondents said they thought
their chapter size was manageable (14/16). Eight
    (8) respondents said they would like their
chapters to be larger and six (6) said they would
like their chapters size to remain the same. Two
    (2) respondents said they would favor having a
    smaller chapter.
  • An additional comment identified membership
retention as an issue affecting chapter size.
  • Another comment reflected the concerns of a
    couple of larger chapters
  • I feel that our chapter size is too large. By
continuing to increase the size of our chapter so
dramatically each year I think we are losing not
only manageability, exclusivity, but the true
opportunity and ability to get to know each of
our sisters. I realize that as a Panhellenic and
Greek Community we want to be able to allow as
many individuals as possible to join our circle,
however, I believe that this is leading to a lack
of understanding regarding what we were founded
on and why we truly do exist.

  • How do you think the addition of another NPC
group would enhance or hinder the Panhellenic
community at FSU? How do you think it would
    affect your chapter?
  • Respondents cited the following ways that a new
NPC group would be an enhancement
  • be beneficial in growing the Greek system
  • bring more women into Panhellenic organizations
  • reduce the number of women who dont find a house
    they like during recruitment
  • more women can be placedmore options leading to
    a stronger system
  • more options for placement
  • another place for women to find themselves at
    home
  • enhance diversity of system
  • the more the merrier
  • smaller chapters will appear more established
during recruitment (in comparison with the new
chapter), which may help with getting a higher
number of PNMs to pledge a smaller existing
    chapter
  • able to achieve the goals of higher membership
(through the new chapter) while also taking
pressure off existing chapters to meet such a
    high quota
  • additional women to help towards our PH/FSU
    philanthropies such as Dance Marathon
  • even number of PH sororities for
    sister-sorority events

  • How do you think the addition of another NPC
group would enhance or hinder the Panhellenic
community at FSU? How do you think it would
    affect your chapter?
  • Respondents cited the following ways that a new
NPC group would be a hindrance
  • reduce membership in smaller chapters rather than
    helping them grow
  • be more difficult for smaller chapters to make
    quota
  • not all chapters at FSU are stable enough to add
    a new chapter
  • confuse and possibly hinder the equilibrium of
    existing houses
  • not enough Greek Life/Panhellenic staff to manage
    the current number of groups
  • appears there was enough variety for the PNMs to
    choose from during recruitment
  • Additional comment
  • Looking at our finances, I just cant see how we
can support expansion within the next few
yearsany decline in membership could be a real
    problem.

12
Future Planning
  • If extension is approved, how will your chapter
support the needs of any struggling groups? How
will your chapter support the needs of the new
    group?
  • Respondents cited the following ways they would
    support struggling groups
  • participating in philanthropies, with a focus on
    existing groups
  • offering advice regarding programming, using
their own chapters successes as benchmarks
  • having all chapters participate in Spring
Recruitment to help smaller chapters reach
    quota/total
  • officers from different chapters providing
    support to each other

13
Future Planning
  • If extension is approved, how will your chapter
support the needs of any struggling groups? How
will your chapter support the needs of the new
    group?
  • Respondents cited the following ways they would
    support a new group
  • pair with the new group for Dance Marathon and/or
    Homecoming
  • educate the new chapters executive board about
the FSU Greek system and ways to get involved on
    campus
  • host the new group for dinner
  • promote a positive relationship between their
    chapter and the new group
  • whatever is necessary
  • not suremy chapter is smaller than others
  • attending the new groups events
  • officers working with officers of the new group
  • make their transition as smooth as possible

14
Future Planning
  • If extension is approved, how will your chapter
support the needs of any struggling groups? How
will your chapter support the needs of the new
    group?
  • Additional comments
  • New group and struggling groups would have a
harder time participating in Dance Marathon,
    Homecoming, etc.
  • Honestly I dont know how we would support the
needs of struggling chapters, its not like we
can give them money or members, I guess we could
offer moral support and try to understand where
they are coming from and be thankful we are not
    in the same position.
  • I think that Greek organizations would be more
willing to pair up with the new organizations for
Homecoming and Dance Marathon, if not to welcome
them, but also for the fact newer organizations
are very motivated to establish their presence on
campus and to try more than already established
    organizations.
  • As a smaller chapter on campus we could work
with the new group to develop our image together
and be able to combine our limited resources for
Homecoming and Dance Marathon to represent our
part of the Panhellenic community better.

15
Future Planning
  • If extension is approved, how should the FSU
Panhellenic Association support the need of
    struggling groups?
  • How should the FSU Panhellenic Association
support the needs of a new group?
  • Respondents cited the following ways the FSU
    Panhellenic Association should support struggling
    groups
  • create an award for groups that display vigorous
support for smaller/struggling groups (same for
    supporting the new group)
  • eliminate/regulate courting for pairings in
    campus activities
  • increase focus on Spring Recruitment
  • continue to promote equality throughout the
    organization
  • continue to work on special issues such as snap
    bidding and COB

16
Future Planning
  • If extension is approved, how should the FSU
Panhellenic Association support the need of
    struggling groups?
  • How should the FSU Panhellenic Association
support the needs of a new group?
  • Respondents cited the following ways the FSU
Panhellenic Association should support a new
    group
  • assume a teaching role for first year or two
  • have executive boards meet with new groups
officers for training (create an advisory team)
  • add more recruitment parties to have smaller
numbers of women at each party
  • attract a wider variety of women for membership
    through publicity efforts
  • provide training on how to work with Panhellenic
    system during recruitment (understanding release
    figures, etc.)
  • plan meet and greet events with existing
    chapters and all councils
  • make sure the new group is well-paired for first
    few campus events
  • create a buddy system for officers to learn
    from other chapters
  • have the stronger groups share recruitment
techniques and ideas for keeping new members
  • invite stronger chapters from other campuses to
come and advise the struggling and new group

17
Future Planning
  • If extension is approved, how should the FSU
Panhellenic Association support the need of
    struggling groups?
  • How should the FSU Panhellenic Association
support the needs of a new group?
  • Additional comments
  • If extension is approved I think it is important
to still focus on the newer groups and not just
the newest group. I think that if this were to
happen, the struggling groups may feel like they
are getting brushed to the side and that their
concerns to become well established may not be as
    important to Greek Life.
  • The Panhellenic Association must maintain the
image that they are available to help the
chapters grow instead of being a negative
    enforcer or rule maker.
  • If it was approved I think Panhellenic would be
MOST supporting to the needs of struggling
groups. This Panhellenic is strong and organized
and would be great at welcoming a new addition to
    the campus.
  • During the 2007 Formal Recruitment Panhellenic
and the groups on campus made great strides in
working with the recruitment systems and making
the numbers work in their best interest.
Although all chapters made quota, some with
additions, that does not solve the problem of
retentionI hope that Panhellenic will continue
to give that great attention in the future.

Women Registered and Pledged
19
Percent of PNMs Pledging
20
Why Do Women Withdraw from Recruitment?
  • Did not get the invites they wanted
  • Finances
  • Sororities are not for them
  • Decided to wait until next year
  • Parents did not want them to join
  • Other

21
Looking to the Future
  • Most Recent Formal Recruitment Data
  • 2007
  • 1257 women registered
  • 796 women pledged
  • 406 women withdrew (45 women were no shows)
  • Quota was 51
  • 15 out of 15 chapters made quota

22
  • Looking to the Future
  • Based on data collected and if the trends from
the past 6 years continue, we put together some
    projections
  • 2008
  • 1260-1320 women should register(5-10 increase)
  • 769-805 women should pledge
  • 491-515 women may withdraw
  • Quota may be 51-54

23
  • Looking to the Future
  • Based on data collected and if the trends from
the past 6 years continue, we put together some
    projections
  • 2009
  • 1323-1452 women should register(5-10 increase)
  • 807-886 women should pledge
  • 516-566 women may withdraw
  • Quota may be 54-59
  • If we add a chapter, quota may be 50-55.

24
Also Consider
  • Florida State Enrollment
  • Summer/Fall 2007 FSU capped the number of
    freshmen at 6276. 2006 welcomed 7241 freshmen.
  • An expected cap on the number of freshmen
entering Florida State in 2008 and/or an increase
of tuition will most likely affect numbers going
through recruitment and current chapter size.
  • Chapter Numbers
  • With the possible addition of another chapter,
there were doubts among house corporation
advisors that chapters could remain functional if
    campus total is decreased.
  • 4 house corporation advisors noted that their
chapter budgets would suffer if chapter total
    fell below 130

There is no guarantee numbers will decline
25
