Title: THE CHALLENGE OF PORCELAIN VENEERS

1
THE CHALLENGE OF PORCELAIN VENEERS
  • Dr Radmila Dimovska
  • KRUNA MS
  • Private Dental Practice
  • Skopje

2
WHAT ARE PORCELAIN VENEERS
  • Porcelain veneers are extremely thin porcelain
shells that have the thickness of 0.5 mm, and
which are applied on the tooth in order to attain
    aesthetically satisfactory smile.
  • They are used to cover labial surfaces of chipped
    or discolored teeth.

3
ARE YOU A PORCELAIN VENEER CANDIDATE?
  • Patients who would like to have veneers applied
have to have healthy and strong teeth.
  • Porcelain veneers are mostly used in cases of
  • Discolored teeth (ex. Tetracycline teeth)
  • Unshapely teeth
  • Lightly misaligned teeth
  • Small gaps in-between teeth
  • Worn and chipped teeth

4
APPLICATION PROCEDURE
  • Three visits to the dentist are required
  • During the first visit, the dentist should
explain the patient the nature of veneers and the
procedure for their application, including all
    benefits and disadvantages.
  • The second visit is used for preparation
activities, i.e. taking impression of the teeth.
This activity requires the use of long, thin and
    cylindrical burs.

5
  • The preparation procedure involves elimination of
the vestibular part of the tooth in depth of 0.6
    1 mm.
  • Approximate points are not to be scraped, but
provided they are, then scraping should be
    extended obliquely.
  • Provided that scraping is painful to the patient,
it may be done with the help of local anesthesia.
  • As soon as preparation activities are completed,
    teeth impressions may be taken.

  • Since only a small part of the labial area of the
tooth is scraped off, most cases dont require
    temporary restoration.
  • The impression is then taken to the laboratory,
where the veneers are made in a period of several
days to a week. Veneers are made of metal-free
ceramics (Empress-2 on Ivoclar- Vivadent )

  • The veneers are applied on the third visit to the
office. After the initial fitting they are
cemented to the teeth. The teeth are first
cleaned with polishing paste and then brushed.
Cementing is carried out by using cement with the
same color of the teeth. It may be regular or
    photopolymerisation one. (Ivoclar- Vivadent)
  • The applied veneers are durable and resistant to
    the pressure caused by mastication.

  • Still, patients should avoid chewing bones and
taking big bites of hard food, since this may
cause damage to the veneers or even dislocate
    them.
  • Patients should take care for the veneers as if
    they were their natural teeth.

13
ADVANTAGES OF PORCELAIN VENEERS
  • Veneers are the newest alternative for patients
in search for a perfect smile. Since they are
strong, they can last for a very long period of
time with the proper care. Veneers allow patients
to get white teeth without the fear of
    discoloration.
  • The short period of creation and application is a
    great advantage.
  • Veneers require no special or greater care other
    than that of natural teeth.
  • A beautiful smile is very attractive.

14
DISADVANTAGES OF PORCELAIN VENEERS
  • Patients need a period of one to two weeks in
order to adapt to the new color, shape or size of
    their teeth.
  • Sometimes there is a need for a fourth visit to
the office in order to control the reaction of
the teeth and gums to the veneers.
  • Reaction to changes in temperature is plausible,
but it fades away within a week.

15
EXAMPLE
  • A 30 year old patient, who had a strong teeth
discoloration as a result of tetracycline
therapy, desired a better appearance of his
teeth. A decision was made that porcelain veneers
are the solution to his problem. The challenge
that this case brings is to cover tetracycline
teeth and acquire a beautiful smile.
