Grace in Service
2
TEXT ROMANS 3 4
  • In considering the concept of the Scriptural
teaching about Gods grace, it is important to
know the answers to these questions

3
I. Is it correct to say that everyone should keep
the Ten Commandments?
  • A They were a rule of conduct for Israel in the
    landDeut 51-3 Ex193-8
  • B. Gal 310The Law became a curse, condemnation
    (2 Cor 39) death Rom 710-11
  • C. It is, therefore, not a standard to seek to
achieve, but a revelation of our incapability
(Rom 320) and so we are free from the bondage of
attempting to keep the Law (Rom 619 74)

4
II. What about the concept of degrees of sinwhy
is that not a Scriptural concept?
  • A. You do what you do, because you are what you
    are
  • B. Gods grace is extended to us because we are
sinners, not because we sin (Rom 56,8)in other
words, the Great Physician deals with the cause,
    not merely the effect!

5
  • C. Grace is needed because of what we are, not
merely because of what we dothus even though the
Law prescribed different penalties, under human
government, for different sins, the sacrifices
that were required were the same no matter what
the sinbecause the sinner needs atonement for
what he is (Rom 39-10), and there is no
difference in the eternal penalty (Rom 623).

6
III. Is there one sin (maybe worse than all
others) which ultimately determines whether a
person goes to heaven or hell?
  • A. Of what sin does the Holy Spirit convict those
who are not savedof violation of the Ten
    Commandments? NoJohn 169
  • B. Thus there is but one sin which determines
whether a person goes to heaven or hellthe sin
    of unbelief (John 318).

7
  • C. Therefore, what is our job
  • 1. It is not to try to be an example to the
unbelievers as to how they ought to live
  • 2. It is not to try to help unbelievers to live
    better
  • 3. It is not to encourage unbelievers keep the
Ten Commandments and live moral livesfor example
to try to get them to use better language, etc.
  • 4. It is to represent Gods grace (2 Cor 214-17)
