  their source, overrule our relationship to God
  and His Word

OBEYING JESUS

• The Pharisees challenged the disciples
• Deuteronomy 2325 When you enter your neighbors
  standing grain, then you may pluck the heads with
  your hand, but you shall not wield a sickle in
  your neighbors standing grain
• Exodus 20 810a Remember the Sabbath day, to
  keep it holy. Six days shall you labor and do all
  your work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath of
  the Lord your God in it you shall not do any work

Violating the Sabbath

• The rabbis had created a list of 39 forbidden
  acts of working on the Sabbath, with six
  sub-categories under each
• 234 ways to violate the Sabbath commandment!
• They saw multiple violations
• Reaping
• Threshing
• Winnowing
• Preparing food

OBEYING JESUS

• Jesus response
• The incident with David and the holy bread
• Leviticus 2459 It shall be for Aaron and his
  sons, and they shall eat it in a holy place for
  it is most holy to him from the Lords offerings
  by fire, his portion forever.

Jesus Traps the Pharisees Again!

• They certainly could not say that David, the
  anointed of God, the founder of the Messianic
  line, the hero of the nation of Israel, wasnt
  granted the right to use whatever God wanted him
  to use!
• If even divinely established ceremonial rules
  were not so rigid as the Pharisees made them, how
  much less then their own man-created rules

The Final Blow

• If the Sabbath had been established by God, to
  claim to be the Lord of the Sabbath was to claim
  equality with God
• The Pharisees had made the Law an end in itself
  and lost sight of the reality behind the LawGod

OBEYING THE WORD OF GOD

• The Pharisees lay in wait for Jesus
• They wanted to do more than discredit Jesus they
  wanted a chance to charge him with blasphemy or
  heresy so they could put him to death
• Jesus response
• TrappedAGAIN!

The Final Response

• Rather than learning, they became angry
• While thinking they were defending the purity
  of the Sabbath, they spent the Sabbath plotting
  about how to murder Jesus!

Questions

• What really runs your life? The Bible, Jesus
  Christ, or everybody else?
• Are you willing to stand for what is right and
  true, even if it goes against that cultural
  current that wants to push you the other way?
• Or are you subtly, quietly, persistently being
  driven by the currents of culture?
