CIVIL WAR IN COLORADO

• The confederacy was a threat to Colorado because
• Southern sympathizers tried to gain control of
  territory to impress European countries in an
  effort to get their support
• Gold in Colorado could help finance the war
• Indians believed that this was a good time to
  attack with the aid of the Confederates

SAND CREEK MASSACRE

• US Troops were sent to keep the Confederacy out
  of Colorado-This was led by Chivington
• 1864-Indians had attacked
• or at least blamed for an
• attack outside of Denver
• Gov. Evans wanted war

• except for a triangular
• shaped reservation between
• the Arkansas River and
• Sand Creek
