Title: NON-AWARD BEARING SHORT COURSES

1
NON-AWARD BEARING SHORT COURSES
  • Quality Unit

2
NON-AWARD BEARING SHORT COURSES
  • There are special procedures for the
  • approval of courses that are -
  • Short, and
  • Non-Award bearing.
  • There is also a specific proposal form.

3
NON-AWARD BEARING SHORT COURSES
  • These procedures enable a non-award
  • bearing short course to be approved within
  • a quicker timeframe and through a less
  • burdensome process.

4
NON-AWARD BEARING SHORT COURSES
  • Why do we have these procedures?
  • So commercial opportunities can be acted upon in
    a timely manner
  • So the process is 'fit for purpose'
  • So academic standards and the quality of the
learning experience are not compromised, even
    given the faster timeframe.

5
NON-AWARD BEARING SHORT COURSES
  • How is the process quicker?
  • Only one brief form needs to be completed for
both business case and academic approval
  • Only limited authorisations are required - No
    separate authorisation form
  • Documentation is kept to a minimum.

6
NON-AWARD BEARING SHORT COURSES
  • So what is a Short Non-award Bearing
  • Course? It is -
  • Short - This is less than 15 undergraduate
credits or fewer than 20 postgraduate credits.

7
NON-AWARD BEARING SHORT COURSES
  • Remember -
  • A standard undergraduate module is 15 credits
and a standard postgraduate module is 20 credits.
So a short course is smaller than a standard
    undergraduate or postgraduate module

8
NON-AWARD BEARING SHORT COURSES
  • Also remember -
  • A total of 10 learning hours are generally
accepted as equivalent to 1 credit so there are
150 learning hours for a 15 credit undergraduate
module and 200 learning hours for a postgraduate
    module
  • This is learning hours not just teaching/ contact
    hours .

9
NON-AWARD BEARING SHORT COURSES
  • A Short Non-award Bearing Course is not
  • just short it is also -
  • Non-award bearing It does not lead to an award
of the University or of any other body

10
NON-AWARD BEARING SHORT COURSES
  • Remember -
  • The following are not considered to be awards
    of the University -
  • Statements of completion
  • Statements of attendance
  • A credit rating (but credit may not be given to
a student unless an assessment is taken and
    passed).

11
NON-AWARD BEARING SHORT COURSES
  • If it is not short and non-award bearing it
should not be considered under these procedures
and should not be submitted on the Non-Award
Bearing Short Courses Business Case Academic
    Approval form

12
AWARD BEARING SHORT COURSES NON-STANDARD AWARDS
  • Where a course does not meet the University
criteria for a non-award bearing short course, it
is subject to the standard procedures for course
approval but the these procedures may be
abbreviated (abbreviated procedures) if it is a
    -

13
AWARD BEARING SHORT COURSES NON-STANDARD AWARDS
  • Award bearing short course
  • A short course - fewer than 15 undergraduate
credits or fewer than 20 postgraduate credits
    i.e. smaller than a standard undergraduate/
    postgraduate module
  • (But) Leads to an award of the University or of
    another body
  • OR

  • Non-award bearing course (not short)

    another body

AWARD BEARING SHORT COURSES NON-STANDARD AWARDS
  • Non-standard award (short or otherwise)
  • Courses that are short or otherwise but do not
lead to a standard award of the University or
other body e.g. specialist one off courses run
for professional bodies or a module sized course
    offered outside of the schemes.

16
AWARD BEARING SHORT COURSES NON-STANDARD AWARDS
  • Why do we have these procedures?
  • As was the case with Non-award bearing short
courses, these procedures enable such courses to
be approved within a quicker timeframe and
through a somewhat less burdensome process.

17
AWARD BEARING SHORT COURSES NON-STANDARD AWARDS
  • How is the process quicker?
  • While the procedures follow the normal TPM
approval procedures in principle they are
abbreviated and lightened. The extent of this
lightening depends on the assessed risk. Areas
that might be lightened include -

18
AWARD BEARING SHORT COURSES NON-STANDARD AWARDS
  • Information required on business case approval
    form
  • Documentation required for approval
  • Authorisation required
  • Business case approval and course approval
    deadlines.

19
AWARD BEARING SHORT COURSES NON-STANDARD AWARDS
  • So how does it work?
  • Abbreviated procedures business case approval-
  • The details for any such proposal should be
discussed ASAP with your Quality Officer
  • They will (in consultation with the Leader of the
Quality Unit, Scheme Director and the Chair of
BDG) advise regarding the requirements in
    relation to business case approval
  • The BDG or the Chair of BDG will then assess the
risk and action required to mitigate the risk.

20
AWARD BEARING SHORT COURSES NON-STANDARD AWARDS
  • So how does it work?
  • Abbreviated procedures - academic course approval
    -
  • Following business case approval, and bearing in
mind the risk assessment undertaken by the BDG,
the Leaders of the Quality Unit will determine an
    appropriate approval process.
