Case Discussion Goals
  • Help the case-writer reflect on and learn from a
    leadership challenge or experience
  • Conversation should be supportive and respectful
    of CW, but also honest and appropriately
    challenging
  • Help the discussion leader refine his/her
    facilitation skills to maximize the learning and
    usefulness for case-writer.
  • Developing a clear agenda
  • Managing the discussion while giving the work to
    the people
  • Bringing the conversation to tangible insights
    and ideas.
  • Help the team members refine their coaching and
    feedback skills

Diagnostic Questions
  • What do you see as the most important issues or
    questions to explore?
  • What was at stake for the case-writer? What were
    her/his goals? Were there other needs at work?
  • Where was CW most and least effective?
  • What pattern of advocacy inquiry do you see CW
    using?
  • What do you see in the case that CW might not be
    aware of?
  • What connections do you see between what CW was
    saying and feeling?

Discussion Flow
  • Clarify and test agenda.
  • CW provides brief overview of issues, questions,
    insights.
  • L guides group in discussing the case
  • Keep the focus on CWs leadership
  • L asks CW to summarize what s/he heard and
    learned from the discussion
  • Group completes feedback forms and turn in to L.

Role of Effective Team Member
  • Offer support, responsiveness, caring, balance of
    advocacy/inquiry
  • Stay focused on what the case writer needs and
    wants
  • Assist the team in staying on track
  • Be open and honest, but sensitive to CWs
    feelings and ability to process input
  • Be patient all learning may not happen now
