Pure Substances

• Matter that has a uniform and unchanging
  composition is a substance.
• A substance is made of the same things in the
  same proportions every time.
• All samples match
• Water
• Lead
• Salt

Two types of substance

• Elements
• Made of only one type of atom
• Cannot be broken down (physically or chemically)
  into simpler substances
• Used to make all other matter
• All listed on the periodic table

• Compounds
• A combination of two or more different elements
  that are combined chemically
• The compound has different properties than the
  elements that make it up
• Can be separated, but only by chemical reactions

Mixtures

• Mixtures are combinations of two or more pure
  substances that can be physically separated.
• Mixtures vary in composition
• Not everyone has the same chicken soup recipe

Two types of mixture

• Heterogeneous
• These are not blended smoothly throughout
• Two samples of the mixture dont match
• Ex
• Raisin Bran
• River water
• Pulpy orange juice

• Homogeneous
• These have a constant composition throughout.
• Always a single phase (i.e. two liquids mixed)
• Often called solutions
• Ex
• Salt water
• Air
• Steel (Iron and carbon)
