Title: 514 ICT
15-14 ICT
Using Technology
2Computer Systems
Today we will look at how computers work and also
at some different pieces of COMPUTER HARDWARE
and find out more about what they are used for.
This section will be concerned with INPUT -
getting data INTO the computer PROCESS - doing
calculations, searching in order to find
something and sorting things in order OUTPUT -
getting information OUT of the computer BACKING
STORAGE - is storing data and information for
later use.
3Computer Systems
Here are the FOUR STAGES OF COMPUTING which show
how computers work.
INPUT
PROCESS
OUTPUT
BACKING STORAGE
4 INPUT DEVICES
The following pieces of computer hardware are
used as input devices- Keyboard, Mouse,
Microphone, Digital Camera and
Concept Keyboard Large touch sensitive keyboard
with pictures - good for very young children.
Video Digitiser A video digitiser is used to
transfer a TV picture or a picture from video
cassette to the computer system. This can then
be stored, changed and used in documents.
5Process Device
The device that does the calculations and the
searching and sorting is the processor (or
microprocessor). A processor is a special type of
microchip.
6OUTPUT DEVICES
The following pieces of computer hardware are
used as output devices- Â Monitor, Printer,
Speaker and
Computers can also control mobile robots and
vehicles like Trekkers, and turtles. The
instructions that the computer gives are output
to the mobile vehicles to control their
movements.
7Backing Storage Devices
- We have already seen that the following devices
can be used for storing computerised
information- - floppy disk drive using a floppy disk
- CD ROM and CD-I using CD drives using CD ROM
Disks and CD-I disks
8Levels D/E Worksheets
Activity 1- Complete the Components. Here is a
block diagram of a computer computer system.Â
Your task is to copy and complete the diagram by
writing in the correct words for each box. You
should also use arrows to show how the boxes are
connected.
9Backing Storage Devices
Here is another backing storage device- Hard
Disk comes built in to computer systems and is
part of the main system unit. Hard disks have a
very large amount of space for storage, more than
floppy disks and CD ROMs, which means that much
more can be kept on them. It is usually much
faster to load programs from the hard disk than
it is to load them from floppy disk or CD ROM.
10Other IT Hardware
IT Hardware does not just mean things to do with
computers. There are other pieces of hardware
which we use in our everyday lives. Some of these
you will already know- Video Recorder Used to
record television programs. As well as simply
viewing, stills can be shown on the TV screen and
parts of the recording can be viewed in slow
motion or you can rewind and watch parts of the
recording time and time again.
11Other IT Hardware
Camcorder This can be used by people with little
or no training to record moving images. For
example, some police cars use them to record car
chases and provide evidence of cars driving over
the speed limit. The fire service may use them to
record firemen fighting a fire. This can be
looked at later to find out how well the job was
carried out and to work out if a better way can
be found to do the job.
12Uses of IT
In this section, we will look at how Information
Technology may be used in a NATIONAL
SETTING. Computers and other devices may be used
by- Industry and Business
13Uses of IT
Many industries use technology to help them speed
up their work, produce better products and do
dangerous jobs .
- Car Manufacture
- Computers are used to control robots which are
used to weld parts of cars together and to spray
paint the body work of cars. - Advantages the quality of work done will always
be of a high standard the robots take over work
which humans find boring more work can be done
in the same time. - Disadvantages the cost of the computers, robots
and software is very high some workers in the
car manufacture industry may lose their jobs
14Levels D/E Worksheets
- Activity 2 - Describe a Device
- COPY AND COMPLETE the following descriptions-
- A _________ will perform all the calculations in
a computer. - If a pupil wishes to to transfer a picture from a
video program to the computer they will need to
make use of a ________Â _________. - Printers are good examples of ___________Â
____________. - Found inside the computer, a ____ _____ stores
more information than a floppy disk or CD Rom.Â
This is an example of a ____ _____ device.
15Levels D/E Worksheets
Activity 3 - READ THE FOLLOWING CAREFULLY....
Pupils at a Computing and Sports Camp want to
make a video of themselves on the go-karts. They
want to show this video to other groups at the
Camp at the end of the day. All the pupils felt
this was useful because they could look at all
the mistakes they made and try to improve the
next time they would try. As part of the week,
the group are making a newsletter about all the
activities they took part in. Someone suggests
that it might be possible to take some of the
pictures from the video and put them into the
newsletter.
16Levels D/E Worksheets
NOW ANSWER THE FOLLOWING QUESTIONS 1.What device
would the pupils need to make the video? 2.What
do they need to make sure they have before they
can show it to the other groups? 3. The action
on the go-karts was so quick that they could not
see all that had happened. How could the pupils
get round this problem? 4. What additional piece
of computer hardware would they need to transfer
pictures from the video on to the newsletter on
the computer. 5. Name two jobs where some of the
workers might make videos. 6. Write down what
they might use the videos for.
