What is a Dugong?

• The dugong is a sea cow
• They are a cross between a dolphin and a pig
• Adult dugongs weigh up to 1000kg

• They live about 70 years
• They eat about 15 types of sea grass
• They eat sea cucumbers, mussels and algae
• They are sometimes called sea pigs and sea cows
• The adult dugong weighs up to 1000kg

Why is the Dugong endangered?

• Because of fishing
• Get hit by boats
• Pollution damages sea grass beds
• Without sea grass to eat dugongs will die
• Indigenous hunting

How is a Dugong being protected?

• Dugongs do not survive in captivity
• Classed endangered in 1982
• You are not allowed to hunt, kill or wound
  dugongs
• Reduce the amount of pollution in the sea
• Conserve/regrow sea grass
