Title: The Battle for Poland

1
The Battle for Poland
  • By Cadet Sanchez

2
  • Just as Hitler had done with Austria and
Czechoslovakia, he demanded from the Polish
government an area of land that was in Poland
that had a high German population. The Polish
government would not give in however since any
other time a country had given Germanys demands,
they were soon invaded. On August 30, 1939,
Poland mobilized its armed forces and told them
    to be ready for battle.

  • The Poles were very careful to  avoid
agitating the German Government so as to avoid
war. Polish strategy was a deliberate ploy to
gain sympathy if a war started from the upcoming
battle. On August 31, German soldiers dressed as
Polish soldiers attacked a German radio station
on the German-Polish border. This was used to be
the beginning of the German invasion of Poland.

4
  • The battle for Poland was one sided in many
ways. The German Air Force was able to launch
attacks that destroyed most of the Polish Air
Force on the ground. The Army was unable to cope
with the speed of massed armored thrusts behind
    their lines.

5
  • While the Polish Army attempted to contain
the advancing Germans, the Soviet Army launched
its promised attack into Poland. A war on two
fronts was more than Polish Army could handle. By
1 October 1939 Poland was forced to surrender. In
just under a month the nation of Poland was
defeated and divided up between Germany and the
    Soviet Union.

6
  • France and England stood by and watched with
horror the power and speed of the German
blitzkrieg. They were unable to send help to an
isolated Poland, but they had hoped to invade
Germany from the West. Unfortunately, for Poland,
the war was over before England or France began
    preparations for war.
