• Previously I worked as a Nursing Assistant.
  Looking on at the speech and language therapists
  job as being very, very easy!

• Despite having worked in the NHS my knowledge
  of SLT was limited and prior to interview I got
  most of my information from the RCSLT web site.

Success, the job is mine!

• Once I started the job and began my training to
  become a Speech and language therapy assistant, I
  realised how mistaken I had been. This is a
  busy, stressful job.

Key aspects of the job

• Undertaking elements of assessment.
• Providing advice.
• Participating in training for carers.
• Participating in multi-disciplinary review.
• Group or individual intervention.
• Reviewing and monitoring progress.

Being a man in a womans world

• Ayrshire and Arran have 68 therapists and when
  I joined I was the first man.
• There are positives and negatives to
  this situation.

• Role of the support worker
• Work with individual clients
• Feedback from day centres, carers and provider
  staff
• Caseload and data returns
• Activity of S.L.T.A to date

SVQ/HNC? future

• Through the post being managed by SLT I have now
  had the opportunity to begin working on my SVQ.
