Point of View

• The perspective from which the story is told
• Position from which things are viewed

Characterization

• The authors means of conveying to the reader a
  characters personality, life history, values,
  physical traits
• How a characters thinks, feels, and acts
• What a character says

Setting

• The time and place where a story occurs

Foreshadowing

• Where future events in a story, even sometimes
  the outcome, are suggested by the author before
  they happen

Imagery

• Language that describes something in detail,
  using at least one of the five senses
• 5 senses sight, sound, touch, taste, smell

Symbolism

• The use of specific objects to represent abstract
  ideas
• Symbol something tangible or visible (something
  you can hold in your hand or draw a picture of)
• The idea it symbolizes must be something you
  cant hold in your hand or draw a picture of

Conflict

• A struggle between opposing forces which drives a
  story forward

Plot

• Sequence of events in a story
• How the story progresses from beginning to end

• The main idea or message conveyed by the piece of
  literature

• Where animals or inanimate objects are portrayed
  in a story as people, such as by walking,
  talking, or being given arms, legs, facial
  features, or human locomotion

• The main character in a story
• The one with whom the reader is meant to identify

Antagonist

• The source of a storys main conflict
• Counterpart to the protagonist

Round Character

• A character that shows many different traits,
  faults, and virtues
• They display internal conflicts found in most
  people

Flat Character

• A character that only shows one or two sides of
  his/her personality
• They are not complex and are usually stock
  characters
• Dumb blonde
• Mean step-father

• A character that develops and grows during the
  course of the story
• The character undergoes some change due to the
  conflicts in the plot

• A character that does not change
• The readers perception of that character does
  not grow

• A character struggles against some outside force
