Title: Establishing authority through commands and statements' Matthew 28:19

1
Bible Authority Commands  Statements
  • Establishing authority through commands and
    statements. Matthew 2819

2
Introduction
  • As noted in the overview of this series
  • There are many differing interpretations
    regarding Gods word.
  • We also know that God who is not the author of
confusion sufficiently provides and guides man
    through His inspired word.
  • Through undeniable principles and its surrounding
context (who, what, when, where, how, why) a
person can understand Gods holy word.

3
Introduction
  • The following principles while rudimentary
are undeniable in setting forth a sound
    understanding of Gods word.
  • Commands and Statements.
  • Approved examples.
  • Necessary inferences (it is necessary to come to
    this conclusion).
  • Silence of the scriptures (when God does not
reveal himself to us explicitly or implicitly).

4
Introduction
  • This lesson will focus on two principles under
    the headings Commands and Statements.
  • Commands A charge given (as a decree) which must
    be fulfilled.
  • Statement A declaration of information.

5
Introduction
  • These must be understood in light of surrounding
    context.
  • For instance, we do not follow every single
command or statement just because they are
    written in the scriptures.
  • Nor do we neglect every single command or
    statement given in the scriptures.
  • Context (who, what, when, where, how, why, etc.)
determines which commands/statements we abide by.
    Cp. 2 Tim. 316

6
Commands and Statements
  • Every command or statement by way of context
    is both general and specific.
  • The context determines the level of specificity
    and generality of the command.
  • It is specific to the point that everything must
be accepted and adhered to within the confines of
    the command.
  • It is general to the point, however, in that
there is freedom in how the command is fulfilled.

7
Commands and Statements
  • Example Matthew 2819-20
  • We have a command to Go into all the world
    making disciples.
  • Specifically We are limited to making
    disciples.
  • The command is exclusive in what believers do
with regard to the world make disciples.
  • To go beyond or fall short of this command is
equated with a lack of faith. Cp. Heb. 116
  • Generally We have freedom within the confines of
the command in how we fulfill go into all the
    world.

8
Commands and Statements
  • Example Matthew 2819-20 (cont.)
  • The command further specifies we are to make
disciples by baptizing them in the name of...
  • Specifically we are limited in that they must be
    baptized.
  • The command is exclusive to baptism.
  • To go beyond (pouring, sprinkling, etc.) or fall
short (not baptizing) is equated with a lack of
    faith.
  • Generally We have freedom where they may be
    baptized. (because context reveals various
locations, thereby negating the limitation of
    where such occurs).

9
Context in Light of Commands or Statements
  • Every command or statement found in the Bible
must be understood in light context immediate or
    otherwise.
  • Who is involved in the text (or subject) under
    consideration.
  • What specifically is commanded or stated.
  • When, where, how, or why was this command given
    or statement made.

10
Context in Light of Commands or Statements
  • Example Matt. 2819-20
  • Who is involved?
  • The Lord is the one who gave the charge to make
    disciples.
  • The Lords disciples are the ones who were
charged to go into the world

11
Context in Light of Commands or Statements
  • Example Matt. 2819-20
  • What specifically was commanded or stated?
  • Make disciples
  • What did disciples do as revealed in scripture
to make disciples in light of this command.
  • Are the scriptures used to verify this command
contextual to the covenant the command or
    statement is given?
  • In this case, disciples were made in light of the
new covenant Jesus became the testator of. Heb.
    916-17 Matt. 2627 (Lk. 2430)

12
Context in Light of Commands or Statements
  • Example Matt. 2819-20
  • When was this command given? After Jesus set
forth the new covenantand before He ascended
    into heaven.
  • Why was this command given? So believers of this
gospel who were baptized would have Gods
    wonderful salvation. Mk. 1615-16

13
Conclusion
  • We have seen the undeniable principles of
commands and statements understood in light of
context so that we can properly/soundly interpret
    Gods inspired words.
  • In the following lesson we shall look at how we
properly infer what the Bible necessarily implies.
