What is the ESR Data Warehouse?

• The ESR Data Warehouse has been developed
  alongside the ESR HR system
• Updated monthly with a slice of information
  taken from ESR
• Running alongside ESR since first implementation,
  in August 2005

Key objectives of the ESR Data Warehouse?

• Help to fully realise the benefits of the ESR
  Human Resource system
• Provide a facility to enable both national and
  regional bodies to directly access NHS workforce
  information
• Reduce the requirement for NHS organisations to
  centrally return workforce information

What are the IC doing with the Data Warehouse?

• Populate annual NHS workforce census
• Recently published NHS earnings estimates
• Sickness/absence reporting
• Vacancy reporting
• Equality agenda the increasingly important
  requirement to report on the diversity of the NHS
  workforce

Hows it going?

• OK. Functional issues have been fixed that will
  enable us to fully populate 2007 workforce census
• BUT Whilst the functionality will be there, the
  data may not
• Data completeness and quality issues are
  impacting on the trust we have in data extracted
  from the Data Warehouse
• On the plus side, we are progressing with a
  number of collections

System functionality

• As a new system, ESR and the Data Warehouse will
  have functionality issues
• As users we all have an important role in
  highlighting issues
• The IC and the ESR Project team have established
  a joint working protocol which helps us to
  resolve technical issues
• Example of benefits A fix has recently been
  implemented to enable us to record the location
  organisation of an individual employee

Data Completeness

• In general, the payroll functionality of ESR
  ensures high rates of census field completion
• GMC number an example of a non-pay related field
  with mixed completion rates
• GMC number has a 79 completion rate nationally
  compared with a 99.6 national insurance number
  completion rate
• Data completeness rates have a significant impact
  on the ability to confidently extract data from
  the Data Warehouse

Data Quality

• Data completeness and data quality differ
• Easy to check for completeness but how do we know
  its correct?
• Ensuring high levels of data quality can be a
  painful process!
• The purpose of this workshop is to establish ways
  of making it as painless as possible
• The purpose of this workshop session is to
  identify key ESR data quality issues

• For the rest of this session we would like to
  identify key data quality issues on ESR, and
  their causes
• After lunch we will focus on how we can best
  utilise the system and user behaviours in order
  to establish and maintain high levels of ESR data
  quality
