Title: Agenda: Water and Nitrogen Cycle

1
Agenda Water and Nitrogen Cycle
February 2, 2006 Note Groundhog saw his shadow.
  • Warmup List 3 physical tests for minerals and
    one chemical test.
  • You need
  • Science Binder
  • PENCIL (for drawing)
  • Agenda
  • Dont forget you need to turn in, by Friday
  • One mineral with the following information
  • What it is used for,
  • Where it is from
  • How it is formed.

2nd period G/T Pick a mineral and tell what
would have to happen in Floresville for that
mineral to form here. Due Monday!

Rock Cycle
4
James Hutton (1726-1797)
A farmer and Scottish geologist that was born in
Edinburgh developed the concept of the rock
cycle.
He proposed Rock changes from one form
to another over time, the matter making up rocks
is neither created nor destroyed but simply
changed.
5
Types of Rock
6
Sedimentary Rock
Forms from cementing and compacting
pieces of other rocks together

sandstone
limestone
conglomerate
shale
7
Metamorphic Rock
Heat and pressure on the rock cause
metamorphose (change) ex.
marble
gneiss
schist
8
Igneous Rock
Form from cooling magma (from volcanoes)
obsidian
pumice
granite
9
Three Typesof Igneous rock
Intrusive- cool slowly in the earth to
form large crystals. Extrusive- quickly
cooling on the surface, no
crystals are formed. Pyroclastic- result from
explosive volcanic eruptions which send lava
and gases exploding into the air

Tectonic Plates
  • Earths surface is composed of mobile plates.
  • What evidence do Scientist have for plate
    movement?
  • Volcanoes, island building, faults earthquakes,
    and mountain building.

14
Was there one large continent?
  • What was the massive continent called?
  • Pangaea
  • What is the evidence that it existed?
  • Similarity of coastline shapes

15
Water Cycle
Process of water moving continuously through
the hydrosphere
Hydrosphere- composed of liquid water (surface
and Ground), frozen water (icebergs) and vapor
in the atmosphere.
16

18
Nitrogen Gas
Makes up 78 of troposphere and is required by
organisms to make amino acids.
Continuous cycling of N maintains healthy soils.
Crop rotation- human influence to alternative
nitrogen fixing crops.
19
Ozone
Nitrogen oxide produced by combustion of fuels,
combine with water vapor to form droplets of acid
in smog. It combines with ozone and damages
vegetation, kills trees and irritates lungs

Predicting Results
  • Life on Earth exists because the atmosphere holds
the right amount of the _______________________.
  • Suns energy

23
In an Earth cycle what can be disrupted?
Energy Nutrients gases
24
  • A disruption of the delicate balance of a cycle
    could affect__________.
  • Organisms
  • Producers
  • Consumers
  • decomposers

25
A disruption of organisms will lead to an
imbalance in a complex ________. Food web
26
Water Cycle Questions
  • How does the volcano effect the water cycle?
  • What energy source drives the water cycle?
  • What could be harmful to the water cycle? (min. 3
    items)
  • How does the runoff effect the water cycle?
  • List 3 benefits of the water cycle

27
Nitrogen Cycle Questions
  • How does the volcano effect the nitrogen cycle?
  • What energy source drives the nitrogen cycle?
  • What could be harmful to the nitrogen cycle?
    (min. 3 items)
  • How does the runoff effect the nitrogen cycle?
  • List 3 benefits of the nitrogen cycle.
