Title: 1990 In The Soviet Union Russia

1
1990 In The Soviet Union (Russia)
Comparative Government Mrs. Summers
  • Gorbachev, Yeltsin, and a Political Shift

2
Mikhail Gorbachev
  • Formally elected president of the failing
    Soviet Union.
  • Was elected by the Soviet Congress rather than by
popular election. This influenced his legitimacy
    drastically.
  • Nations were receding one by one from the Soviet
    Union during this period.
  • Gorbachevs reforms were moving the Soviet union
farther towards the right, but many accused
Gorbachev of still moving too slowly.

3
Boris Yeltsin
  • A very influential opponent of Gorbachev and one
who accused him of moving too slowly.
  • Against Gorbachevs wishes was elected as
    Chairman of the Russian Congress.
  • Was much more influential in Russia than
Gorbachev, largely because he was directly
    elected by the people.
  • Helped to organize Russias Declaration of
Sovereignty from the Soviet Union and also
resigned from the Communist Party later that year.

4
Final Analysis
  • The shift from Gorbachev to Yeltsin signified a
new direction for Russia. Gorbachev was often
accused of taking half steps for reform and
Yeltsin was a more radical leader.
  • Russias Declaration of Sovereignty and Yeltsins
resignation from the Communist party effectively
resulted in Russias resignation from the Soviet
Union, which was reliant on Russias size,
strength and populous for its success.
  • Gorbachev remained President of the now almost
crippled Soviet Union and had to do what he could
to keep it in tact as long as possible. This,
however was no longer really Russias concern.
