33Small talk makes activity fun
342007s Childrens Sewing Day was the same day as
the LSU-Florida football game! This animal print
was highly prized for inclusion in a quilt top!
35Girls just wanna have fun!
36Sandpaper, taped to the tabletop, holds the
fabric in place. Fabric markers or crayons can
be used for the pictures. Fabric markers seem to
hold the color longer through repeated machine
washings. Crayons must be heat set.
37Squares are sewn together in pairs, then the
pairs are sewn together to form strips. Then the
strips are sewn together.
38Jelly beans? Easter eggs? Brings back memories,
doesnt it?
39This quilt is completed. It has batting, backing,
and binding around the edges. It has been
quilted by machine along the seam lines. There
are lots of rainbows in this quilt.
40This is another complete quilt. It has
an all-over machine quilting design called
stippling.

42Cheerful quilts on display. See how the
alternating bright novelty fabrics complement the
childrens fabric art squares? Children love
bright colors.
43Creativity takes concentration. . .
44This girl is chain piecing. After she sews 2
squares together she starts sewing the next 2
squares, without cutting the thread between the
pairs. Shell continue in this manner until all
her pairs are stitched.
45You can tell we forced this mom to sit and draw a
picture ?
46Bet you cant draw just one. . .

49We ask the children to draw a picture that would
cheer a sick child, or something that would help
them feel better if they are sick. This teaches
children to think beyond themselves and fosters
awareness of others needs while encouraging
creativity.
50An idea is about to become a picture. . .
51Shreveport Sewing Center provided sewing machines
and educators for Childrens Sewing Day.

local and regional care facilities. Red River
Quilters guild members complete over 200
childrens quilts per year. Thousands of art
squares are produced each year during QuiltQuest,
one of Red River Revels childrens art
activities, that occurs the 5 days prior to
Childrens Sewing Day. During QuiltQuest, area
4th grade students draw a cheerful fabric
picture. Childrens Sewing Day provides everyone
the opportunity to draw, design, and stitch!

artwork! Rainbows, pumpkins, sunshine,
hearts, goofy faces, umbrellas,
flowers, stars, clouds,
