Aristotle

• Whatever Aristotle said was true unless the Bible
  said otherwise
• By 1500s the Scientific Revolution was occurring
• This was a new way of thinking about the natural
  world

Heliocentric Theory

• Nicolaus Copernicus
• Became interested in the old Greek idea that the
  sun stood at the center of the universe
• After 25 years of studying the planetary
  movementshe reasoned that indeed it was true
• Heliocentric means sun centered
• Fearing for his life he did not publish his works
  until the last year of his life

• Found that a falling object accelerates at a
  fixed and predictable rate
• Noted that the earths moon had a rough uneven
  surface
• Catholic and Protestant leaders were frightened
  by him because it went against the churchs
  teachings

• In 1616 Galileo was warned to not defend his
  teachings and Copernicus
• In 1632 he was summoned to Rome to stand trial
  before the pope
• He confessed under threat and lived under house
  arrest for the rest of his life
• In 1992 Pope John Paul II cleared Galileo
